Shinedown had opened the weekend Friday together with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Creed, joined by Nate Smith and Filter, closed the festival Sunday, sending the whole company home well satisfied.
This mixture of styles, heavy with rock, has marked Velocity since its first year, when Tim McGraw and Nickelback headlined the opening two nights of the same gathering upon that same wide Iowa farm — ground forever remembered through cinema, made famous by the 1989 film Field of Dreams. Few fields in the whole country carry such double fame, both for a game of ball imagined and a festival of song made real.
Not Her First Descent Into Metal
Such covers are no novel indulgence for Underwood, who has long shown affection for rock and metal beneath her more polished manner. She has shared stages before with Guns N’ Roses and Papa Roach, proving her taste runs deeper than her ballads alone suggest.
Earlier this year, on the 11th of May, during the finale of American Idol — where she now serves as judge — Underwood joined Mötley Crüe itself for performances of “Home Sweet Home” and “Kickstart My Heart,” earning a standing tribute of applause from the studio audience.
“Home Sweet Home” holds particular meaning for her, having recorded her own version of the Mötley Crüe ballad in 2009, when it served as the farewell song of American Idol’s eighth season.
Thus does Underwood remind the world that beneath her celebrated grace lies something wilder, something that delights in a turned cap and a cry shared with her company rather than sung alone.
