Andy Beshear’s political action committee has spent a quarter of a million dollars on an attack ad aimed at GOP candidate Ralph Alvarado in Kentucky’s open 6th Congressional District race.
The district, which wraps around Lexington and its surrounding area, pits former state Sen. Alvarado against Democratic former federal prosecutor Zach Dembo. Both are running to replace outgoing Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY), who left the House to run for Senate.
Beshear has endorsed Dembo, who formerly worked for him as a policy adviser. President Donald Trump has endorsed Alvarado.
The Ad’s Target
The ad ties Alvarado to former Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin. The PAC’s investment is notable because it comes from Beshear, a Democrat who is now governor of Kentucky, spending heavily to support his party’s Senate rival’s House challenger.
The move puts Beshear’s PAC in the unusual position of opposing a Republican who is also backed by the president.
