Brazil Avenue ran for 179 episodes on TV Globo, from March 26 to October 19, 2012. One season. That is the whole run, and it is enough to make the case that João Emanuel Carneiro built something closer to a crime saga than a soap.
Nina García Hernández and the long con
The premise is revenge, and Brazil Avenue does not dress it up. A young girl’s life is bent by ambition and cruelty, and she comes back to collect. Débora Falabella plays Nina García Hernández, also known as Rita Fonseca de Souza — a woman running an identity as a weapon.
Adriana Esteves is Carmem Lúcia Moreira de Araújo, called Carminha, the stepmother whose cruelty sets the whole machine in motion. Murilo Benício is Jorge Araújo, known as Tufão. Cauã Reymond carries a triple load: Jorge Araújo Filho, called Jorginho, plus Cristiano Moreira and Batata.
That is a lot of names, and Brazil Avenue earns them. The show pairs soap mechanics with mystery and crime, and the mystery is the point.
Maxwell, Lucinda and the Araújo house
Marcello Novaes plays Maxwell Pereira Oliveira, called Max. Vera Holtz is Lucinda Pereira Oliveira, called Mãe Lucinda. José de Abreu is Nilo Oliveira. Eliane Giardini and Marcos Caruso play Muricy and Leleco Araújo. Heloísa Périssé is Monalisa Barbosa, Letícia Isnard is Ivana Araújo Oliveira, and Alexandre Borges plays Carlos Eduardo de Souza Queirós, called Cadinho, also known as Dudu.
The cast is the argument. Brazil Avenue does not run on one villain. It runs on a household where everyone wants something and nobody is clean.

The 179-episode order is the real test of Brazil Avenue. A revenge story that long has to keep finding new ways to hurt people, and this one does.
What matters most is Esteves. Carminha is the engine, and the show knows it. Falabella’s Nina is the plan; Carminha is the reason the plan exists.
The weakest part is the middle stretch, where the mystery has to wait for the soap to catch up. That is a structural cost of the format, not a failure of nerve.
Brazil Avenue is a telenovela that behaves like a thriller, and it holds. 8.1 of 10.
