A ProPublica investigation has found that a Russian oligarch with ties to President Vladimir Putin paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding celebration in the Bahamas. The report, published on PBS NewsHour, says Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman and president of the International Boxing Association, covered significant expenses for the three-day event.
According to the report, Kremlev paid for the rental of a private island and a fireworks display. The exact amount was not disclosed, but the story describes the payments as well into the six figures.
Kremlev’s Record With Putin
Kremlev is not a casual acquaintance. The report describes him as someone with “very close connections to the Russian government,” whose wealth “owes a lot of his wealth to the direct interventions of the Russian government.”
He is also in Putin’s inner circle. Just days before the wedding, Kremlev was in China as part of Putin’s official delegation to that country. Putin himself was in China at the same time. Kremlev has received several awards from Putin, including the Order of Friendship, an important award given out by the Russian government.
His fortune comes from a company that was previously nationalized. The government announced that Kremlev was the new owner of the largest car dealership company in Russia. That ownership arrangement is central to how he built his wealth.
The Instagram Post From Bettina Trump
After the story was published, Bettina Trump, Donald Trump Jr.’s new wife, confirmed the payment on Instagram. She described Kremlev as a personal friend and said he had hosted two nights of celebrations after the wedding.
“Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us after our wedding,” she wrote. “It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful.”
The post confirms the core of the report: Kremlev paid for the weekend parties, not just the ceremony itself. The wedding was on a Friday, with only family present. The next two days drew around 50 guests for the partying.
Why Kremlev Paid
The question the report raises is simple and uncomfortable. How did a man who met Trump Jr. only a couple of years ago end up paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in wedding expenses?
ProPublica spoke to Republican and Democratic former FBI counterintelligence officials for the story. Their response was blunt: if they had heard about this when they were in government, it would have been a “five-alarm situation.”
They would have warned the family member of the president that Kremlev “may have other motivations besides just friendly generosity.”

When asked directly about the payments, Kremlev’s spokesperson did not address the question. Instead, they said Kremlev and Trump Jr. were friends who had met a couple of years ago.
