Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event is almost here. One of the big announcements will almost certainly be a foldable iPhone, a first for Apple. But the phone’s actual name remains a secret.
Three names rule the rumor cycle as the launch nears: iPhone Fold, iPhone Ultra, and iPhone Duo. No one knows the real answer yet at the time of publication, but the betting lines are clear.
Mashable’s Reader Poll
Mashable asked its readers to guess the device’s name in a Big Guessing Game. The results were close but not conclusive.
38 percent of readers predicted the iPhone Ultra. 27 percent guessed the iPhone Fold, with another five percent choosing The Fold. The final 30 percent picked “Something else.”
Why iPhone Fold Might Not Work
For a long time, iPhone Fold was the standard name in articles. It makes sense on paper — it’s an iPhone that folds.
But Apple probably wants to avoid confusion. Samsung’s foldables are also known as “Fold” devices, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Samsung does not have exclusive rights to the word, but Apple likely does not want direct comparisons.
That is why Mashable’s Alex Perry leans against it. “That’s why I’m inclined to believe the phone is not called the iPhone Fold,” he wrote.
The Case for iPhone Ultra
Most recent reporting has used iPhone Ultra. That name did not come from nowhere.
Well-connected Apple reporter Mark Gurman said on X earlier this year that most Apple employees call it that internally. MacWorld also reported that Apple is working on a new “Ultra” tier for this phone.
The device would likely skip the 18 numbering that other new iPhones will carry. It really, really seems likely — but not certain.
A Late Challenger: Duo
Vague rumblings online suggest the name might be iPhone Duo. There is not a lot of firm reporting behind it, but the idea is in the air as the event gets closer.
Perry would not be surprised by a bait-and-switch. “I would not be surprised at all if Apple pulled a minor bait-and-switch and went with Duo after months of basically everyone agreeing that it’s Ultra,” he said.
Variations on the Theme
Other possible names have floated around too. The iPhone Ultra Fold and the iPhone 18 Ultra have both appeared in speculation.
None of these have the same traction as the big three. They remain side bets.
The Wait Is Almost Over
The event happens in less than 24 hours. One way or another, the guessing ends.
