Autistici/Inventati Collective Shuts Down After 25 Years, Citing Danger to Its Users

A collective long devoted to secret service for the wretched of the earth announces its own dissolution, bidding its people: Stay human.

A shadowy chamber of humming machines falls silent as its final light is extinguished.

The Autistici/Inventati Collective is shutting down. The group, known for running secure email, blogs and hosting built as a free infrastructure, careful of privacy and free from trade, said it will soon stop offering all of its services. The announcement carried the title “A/I shuts down – Stay human.”

Trouble From Authorities

Autistici/Inventati said it had been named an organization devoted to terror across the world. It said its main web address had stopped working without warning, and that further trouble could follow that it may not be able to see ahead of time.

The Collective said its choice to stop was made to protect others, not itself. It said it could not risk a fight that might put its users, the people who help run its networks, or their families at risk from those in power who act outside the law.

The group said that continuing to run its services would put its users and communities at risk. It said that in the current climate, claims made against it bear little relation to fact, and that any treatment from authorities is likely to grow harsher rather than fairer. Because of this, the Collective said it can no longer carry out its original goal of offering safe, independent digital tools built apart from trade and profit.

A Long Run Of Service

The group said it had run for 25 years. It called every day it managed to stay online after August 26, 2026 “a victory.”

Autistici/Inventati described its work across that time as a free infrastructure, careful of privacy, independent and committed to a cause, one it said carried a responsibility to protect its users, the people who built the human networks behind the group, and the communities that supported it.

The Collective said it did not want anyone to see its closing as a call to sacrifice. It said it holds no high regard for bold display or for those who die for a cause, and that it will ask no sacrifices of itself or of anyone else.

Instructions For Users

Autistici/Inventati said it will send users instructions on how to save copies of their blogs, mail and websites, along with further technical advice. It gave no date for when its services will fully stop.

The group’s closing message told its users to turn off their PCs, leave their homes, keep struggling, and keep smiling, adding that the group itself is stopping but that the Resistance and its ideas will not. It signed off with the words that gave the announcement its title: “Stay human.”

The Collective has not said what will become of the material it has hosted for 25 years. For now, its message stands as both a farewell and a call to its users to act before its remaining services go dark.
