Geno Ploeger is back on America’s Got Talent, and the 22-year-old magician from Arizona is bringing a fresh twist to his act. He returns for the semifinals this week after making a strong impression in the quarterfinals.
Ploeger’s path to AGT was built on years of practice. He started magic at age five, when his grandfather showed him the ropes in person. Formal lessons began at age eight, split between a local magic shop in his hometown of Wisconsin and online tutorials.
From Birthday Party Magic to Network TV
Ploeger credits Mat Franco, the show’s first magician winner in 2014, with shifting public perception of the craft. Franco’s victory made magic hip again, he says, and performers like Lance Burton and David Copperfield were replaced in the public eye by magicians who kept things simple.
“When I was 10, I watched him win and ever since that moment, he’s been my biggest inspiration and magic,” Ploeger says. “I was like, ‘You know what? I want to do that, too,’ because I just thought he was so relatable. Every magician I had seen up to that point was like the Lance Burtons or the David Copperfields who had these flashy [acts]. I wasn’t like that. I was doing card tricks. And I saw that he could make a career doing stuff that I was doing.”
He submitted for the show multiple times before finally landing a spot this year.
Social Media Success and a Viral Netflix Moment
Ploeger has already built a substantial following online. His TikTok account has drawn over 14 million likes, and he appeared on comedian Matt Rife’s Netflix Christmas special, Unwrapped, where his performance went viral.
“That was crazy in and of itself,” he recalls. “I was performing and saw those tickets come out. I was like, ‘Oh, it’s in my hometown. We should go. It’d be fun to see him, but also see a Netflix special be taped.’ My fiancée and I went and I thought I should probably have magic ready in case because I know he does crowd work. So I was prepped. I had cards on me and it worked out! But it was not planned. It was not planned at all!”
He also insists his TikTok streams are unedited and AI-free. “If I could edit that well, you think I would be a magician? There are so many better things I could do if I was that good of an editor on these videos!” he laughs.
The Pressure of Live Performance
Performing in front of AGT’s judges was a surreal experience, Ploeger says. He sat backstage with host Terry Crews and couldn’t quite grasp the moment.
“There’s nothing that can prepare you to be in front of these people you’ve watched on TV your entire life,” he recounts. “First of all, that’s a wow moment when I’m sitting backstage and [host] Terry Crews is talking to me. It’s like, ‘What are we doing?!’ You know what I mean?”
The crowd noise made it nearly impossible to hear the judges. “On my quarterfinals performance, Sofía [Vergara] was talking after I was done. I heard zero of what she said, zero!” he says. “I read her lips and she said ‘original,’ so I was like ‘Oh, thanks!’ I literally had no clue what she said.”
Semifinals Storytelling
For the semifinals, Ploeger is leaning into personal narrative. Each round has followed a distinct arc:
- The audition told his life story.
- The quarterfinal told his family story.
- The semifinal tells the story of who he is right now.
“Well, it’s obviously a lot more pressure because the level of talent is stepped up and on top of that, I only had three weeks to actually fully prepare this next thing that I’m doing,” he previews. “But the thing I found that people resonated with from my performance was me telling my story and really being me and showing who I am.”

The pressure is real, but so is the opportunity. Ploeger’s authenticity is his calling card, and it has carried him this far.
