A London non-league goalkeeper has been picked to lead a kingdom in Uganda.
SE Dons captain George Desmond Kamurasi is on track to be named the next omukama (king) of the Tooro people. The committee reached its decision following the death of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who lost his battle with cancer.
Kamurasi, who holds British citizenship, reportedly hesitates to leave behind his existence in London, where he resides alongside his wife and son. The ultimate choice rests with him alone: either return to Uganda and take on leadership there, or remain and continue his career in football.
Kamurasi’s Football Home
SE Dons is a club based in Bexleyheath, South-East London, where Kamurasi serves as captain. The team competes in the Southern Counties East Football League, which ranks as the ninth tier of English football.
British rapper Don Strapzy created SE Dons in 2014, and the team became well-known through their YouTube channel, which now has more than 250k subscribers.
Big G, who is known by that name among his friends and peers, frequently shows up in the videos, and he typically gives passionate speeches to his teammates.
The Committee’s Choice
A committee in Uganda made the choice, and it is said that 15 of its 18 members voted to place Kamurasi on the throne.
The people have named Kamurasi as their next omukama, and the decision now belongs to him alone.
A Funeral and a Fixture
Kamurasi might not even be able to attend his cousin’s funeral.
This weekend sees King Oyo laid to rest, yet Kamurasi must play an SE Dons cup fixture on the very same day.
It is still unclear whether he will take part in the Dons’ fixture against Greenways in the second qualifying round of the FA Vase.

There were two paths before him: he could go back to his homeland, Uganda, and take power there. The other option was to remain in London and keep playing football.
The urgent question at hand concerns a choice between two obligations: playing in the cup match this weekend, or attending the funeral.
