Boutique Filmes has assembled a trio of stars from three countries for its upcoming thriller The Mystery of the 5 Stars. Marina Ruy Barbosa, João Guilherme, and Portuguese actor José Condessa will lead the film, directed by Vera Egito, with Sony Pictures handling distribution. The project marks Boutique Filmes’ first co-production with Portugal through Ukbar Filmes.
The film is set against a darker side of São Paulo and follows Guilherme’s Leo, a proud bellboy on a wild journey to solve a murder at the luxury hotel where he works. Bruno Passeri adapts Marcos Rey’s eponymous book, mixing mystery, thriller, and romance. Flávia Costa, film and kids content manager at Globo Filmes, says the adaptation revisits “a classic of Brazilian young adult literature from the 1980s through a contemporary lens.”
A Hotel Murder and a Young Protagonist
The story centers on Leo, a bellboy at a luxury hotel. When a murder occurs on his shift, he becomes the prime suspect and sets out to clear his name. Along the way, he encounters Marina Ruy Barbosa’s character, who remains mysterious about her role in the unfolding events.
Bruno Passeri is adapting Marcos Rey’s book for the screen. The project brings together a Brazilian literary classic with a contemporary thriller framework. Flávia Costa frames the adaptation as a way to introduce younger audiences to a piece of Brazilian cultural heritage.
The Cast Draws Three Countries
João Guilherme’s Leo anchors the story as the protagonist. He begins his career as a child actor on Brazilian telenovelas, and now he is one of the most popular names for teenagers in Brazil. Tiago Mello, a partner at Boutique Filmes, calls Guilherme a “phenomenon.”
Marina Ruy Barbosa plays a mysterious woman who doesn’t know what game she is playing. Mello describes her as one of Brazil’s biggest stars, adding that her character’s relationship with Leo is complicated: “is she with him or against him?”
José Condessa rounds out the cast. He recently starred in Pedro Almodóvar’s Strange Way of Life, appearing alongside A-listers Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke. His presence adds weight to the international dimension of the project.
Vera Egito Takes Over Direction
Egito is known for directing one of Brazil’s buzziest recent series, Prime Video’s Tremembé. Her appointment as director is tied directly to her ability to connect with the young adult demographic. Mello notes that “Tremembé” is a huge success and that the studio is thrilled to be working with her on this project.
Shooting is planned for later this year. The film is scheduled for festival appearances in 2027, with a big national premiere slated for the end of next year. Mello says the goal is to present a film with an auteur vision while maintaining its young adult target audience.
Why Young Audiences Matter Now
Boutique Filmes has spent the last few years investing in young adult audiences. The company’s strategy includes projects such as Netflix’s dystopian series 3%.
Tiago Mello emphasizes the urgency of the market: “We cannot lose this audience. If they don’t watch movies now, they are not going to later.” He adds that it is really important to create this kind of film.
The project is part of Globo Filmes’ slate of projects aimed at younger audiences. Flávia Costa says the film reaffirms the company’s commitment to bringing important works of Brazilian literature to the screen and telling stories that resonate with new generations.
Partners and Funding
Globo Filmes, Ukbar Filmes, and Sony Pictures International Productions Brazil are co-producing the film with Boutique Filmes. Mello praises the partners, noting that Globo has been part of “some of the most important films in our history.”
He says the partnership is a perfect fit because Globo wants to connect with the YA audience. The collaboration also marks Boutique Filmes’ first co-production with Portugal, a strategic move given that young Portuguese audiences have been rising consumers of Brazilian content.
Boutique Filmes tapped into São Paulo state funding to secure the budget it asked for. Mello says the film is very connected to São Paulo, showing the Italian neighborhood of the city for the first time and promoting a vision of the metropolis.
What Comes After Production
The production timeline is straightforward. Shooting starts later this year, followed by festival appearances in 2027 and a national premiere at the end of next year. The plan is to release a trailer that can excite sales agents ahead of those dates.
Mello says the film will have a Hitchcockian feel while never losing sight of its young adult target. He describes it as a very popular film with an artistic vision.
