Without Blood wants to be a weighty frontier drama about a father protecting his children against gunmen. Instead it arrives as a film with good intentions but little shape, rushing through its own setup to get to a conclusion that feels hurried and thin.
Angelina Jolie directs and writes the picture, set at the start of the 20th century on a remote farm. A doctor lives there with his son and daughter, trying to keep them safe from gunmen who come calling for revenge. The premise asks for patience: a father, a child, a threat, a landscape. What it delivers is a film that can’t hold its own pace.

The Setup
The film opens with the doctor, played by Demián Bichir, living alone with his children. The gunmen arrive soon after, led by Salma Hayek Pinault as Nina, joined by Juan Minujín as Salinas, Andrés Delgado as Salinas’ brother and Jorge Antonio Guerrero as El Blanco. The threat is real, the stakes are clear, and the premise is simple enough to sustain a long, careful build.
It doesn’t.
The Pace Problem
The pacing sags in the middle stretch, then rushes at the end. The Wrap put it plainly: “Not only does the film’s conclusion then feel quite rushed, it’s hard to say that everything that preceded it was patient enough either.” That’s the whole of it. A film built on dread and protection should earn its climax through tension, not hurry toward it.
The Cast
Bichir anchors the picture as the doctor. He’s a steady presence, capable of holding scenes that the script can’t fully support. Pinault, Minujín, Delgado and Guerrero round out the gunmen, each given just enough to suggest menace without being developed fully. The ensemble is capable, but the script gives them little room to land.
Where It Lands
Without Blood is a film with good intentions but little shape. The premise is strong, the cast is capable, the setting is vivid. None of that saves it from a conclusion that feels rushed and a middle stretch that never settles into a steady rhythm.
