Billie Eilish’s Debut Trusts Silence as Much as Sound

The 13-second opener is a joke and a warning at once. It drops listeners straight into the record’s private, troubling logic before “bad guy” even starts.

Bad Guy And The Early Run

“bad guy” is the center the whole album turns on: a bare, taunting bassline that became the record’s signature. “xanny” follows with an unsteady, horn-tinged warning about substance abuse among her peers. “you should see me in a crown” turns menace into a confident walk, and “all the good girls go to hell” wraps climate dread in a sing-song melody.

Wish You Were Gay And The Middle Songs

“wish you were gay” is the record’s lightest moment, a parting song dressed up in old-style chords. “when the party’s over” strips everything back to voice and piano, and it’s painful for it. “8” is brief and strange, Eilish’s voice pitched up to a child’s register.

The Middle Stretch

“my strange addiction,” “bury a friend” and “ilomilo” form the album’s darkest patch. “bury a friend” is the standout of the three, built from clattering, drum-machine sounds and a chorus built around fear and guilt. The other two are darker, more sketch than song, but they keep the record’s nerve whole.

Listen Before I Go, I Love You, Goodbye

The closing trio slows everything down. “listen before i go” is the album’s most direct look at despair. “i love you” trades production tricks for two voices and a plain guitar. “goodbye” ends the record in under two minutes, stitching lyrics from earlier tracks into a farewell.

Old Fashioned, Modern, Both
