Exodus arrives April 7, 2027: a solemn tale of time, decay, and a wanderer named Jun Aslan amid star and shadow.

A solitary traveler and his beastly companion gaze upon a dying world from the silent depths of a spectral station.

Developer Archetype Entertainment has shared new details about Exodus, its upcoming science fiction RPG, with a release date of April 7, 2027. The game first appeared in 2023, and the team has spent the years since building out a space adventure backed by Wizards of the Coast.

The developer recently let press play a mostly complete mission on PC. That hands-on time revealed how the game handles combat, dialogue and crew management, along with a look at the creatures and characters players will meet.

Here’s what we know about Exodus so far.

Time Dilation Drives the Story of Jun Aslan

Exodus centers on the effects of time dilation. Days of interstellar travel for the player’s character mean decades passing for people back home. That setup creates practical and sometimes heartbreaking stakes for the story.

Players take on the role of Jun Aslan, a “Traveler” who starts the game as a humble salvager on a dying world. The planet is overrun by a technovirus called The Rot. To save his home, Jun must reclaim the legacy of his father, Orion Aslan, a famed veteran Traveler.

The Rot is a byproduct of The Celestials, descendants of the first humans who have evolved roughly 40,000 years beyond current humanity. They pose a persistent threat to human survival in the game’s universe.

Jun carries a genetic quirk that lets him interact with Celestial technology. That ability grants him special active powers, which players upgrade throughout the journey. The system resembles the ability trees seen in Mass Effect, with environmental modifiers, attacks and defensive techniques all tied to these powers.

The Awakened Bring Talking Animals to the Crew

The universe of Exodus is full of animals granted human intellect. These beings, called The Awakened, have plenty to say about how humans have treated them. The team has revealed eight of Jun’s companions so far, with hints that more are on the way.

The current roster includes Tom Vargas, Elise Charroux, Phaedra Nath, Salt, Houston, Suliman, C.C. Orlev and Emrys. Reports suggest there are 11 crew members to find in total.

One standout is Houston, an Awakened anthropomorphic wolf who happens to be Jun’s adopted brother. Another is Salt, a blunt bounty-hunting Awakened Octopus in a mech suit. Salt serves as a sniper and can use her ink as a smokescreen for cover in combat.

The Gamescom trailer introduced Salt to audiences. Octopi seem to be having a moment, from the 2020 film “My Octopus Teacher” to a notable relationship in The Boys. In Exodus, players will meet lots of Awakened species, tentacled or otherwise.

A Mission Inside a Space Station

The hands-on demo sent Jun into the hangar bay of a large orbital space station. The station houses a race of Awakened Frogs known as the Kay from the planet Lidon. The Kay have been exploited and driven into exile.

One Kay named 42C has developed a fondness for human music, specifically heavy electronica, and is eager to help guide Jun through the mission. Jun’s partner for the operation is Suliman, a representative of a powerful faction that Jun must align with to get critical ship parts.

The dialogue sequences feature strong facial animations and well-performed writing from Narrative Director Drew Karpyshyn and his team. Karpyshyn’s team includes alumni from Bioware, Naughty Dog and 343 Industries. The script carries a distinctly Biowaresque feel.

Combat Blends Crew Commands With Agility

The demo showed a combat system that borrows heavily from successful genre leaders. Mass Effect’s team directing mechanics appear almost identically, which made it easy to jump into a mission set a couple hours into the game without feeling lost.

Jun can sprint, jump, grapple, dive behind cover, roll, dodge attacks and scale ledges. The character feels agile and rarely constrained by the environment. The mission began in a micro-gravity setting, moving through the guts of the ship.

In true action-RPG form, players spend a good portion of combat issuing commands to their crew in slowed-down time. A radial menu slows the game speed, giving players precious seconds to target enemies and queue up crew instructions.

The Long Road to Launch

Exodus was first shown in 2023, and the gaming landscape has shifted considerably since then. Many games have come and gone in that span. The question of whether Exodus has kept pace with the market is fair.

The developer has used the time well, according to the hands-on preview. Archetype Entertainment is backed by Wizards of the Coast, and the studio appears to be on the downhill run toward release.

The team is avoiding the crowded November window, choosing to launch on April 7, 2027 instead.

What We Still Don’t Know

Several details remain unclear. The full extent of Jun’s abilities and how they evolve over the course of the game has not been fully explained. The lore behind why Jun can interact with Celestial technology is still being kept under wraps.

The complete crew roster has not been announced. The team has teased that more companions exist beyond the eight revealed so far, but their identities and roles remain a mystery.

The Bottom Line

Exodus is shaping up to be a familiar but polished take on the action-RPG genre. The Bioware influence is strong, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing given the pedigree of the team behind it.

The time dilation concept adds emotional weight to the story, and the Awakened bring a fresh twist to companion interactions. The combat looks solid, and the previewer reported being able to jump into a mission without feeling overwhelmed.

The April 7, 2027 release date gives the team time to refine the experience. If the hands-on demo is any indication, that time is being put to good use.

Exodus has a lot riding on it. The team’s pedigree suggests they know what they’re doing, but the proof will come when players get their hands on the full game.
