A Body on the Øresund Bridge

The Bridge put a body on the Øresund border, forcing Swedish and Danish police to share a case. Sofia Helin's Saga Norén carried four seasons and 38 episodes.

A solitary figure walks across a misty bridge connecting two countries at night.

A body lies at the exact midpoint of the Øresund Bridge, on the border between Sweden and Denmark. Neither country can claim the case alone. So two detectives have to share it, and The Bridge builds four seasons out of that forced partnership.

A Body on the Øresund Bridge

Hans Rosenfeldt created and wrote The Bridge, a joint production between Sweden’s SVT and Denmark’s DR. The first season starts with the discovery of the corpse at the centre of the span linking Malmö to Copenhagen, which forces a joint investigation. The premise is a jurisdictional problem before it is a murder mystery, and that is the show’s smartest move.

Sofia Helin plays the Swedish detective Saga Norén across all four seasons. In the first and second, her Danish counterpart is Martin Rohde, played by Kim Bodnia. In the third and fourth, the Danish officer is Henrik Sabroe, played by Thure Lindhardt.

Sofia Helin as Saga Norén

The Bridge ran for four seasons and 38 episodes. It first aired on 21 September 2011 and ended on 18 February 2018. It has been shown in more than 100 countries, which is a lot of reach for a series that begins with two police forces arguing over who owns a corpse.

The supporting cast includes Mikael Birkkjær as Jonas, Sarah Boberg as Lillian Larsen, Rafael Pettersson as John Lundqvist, Julie Carlsen as Barbara, Maria Kulle as Linn, Anders Mossling as Frank and Thomas W. Gabrielsson as Niels. The show’s genres are crime, mystery and drama, and it sits squarely in the Nordic noir tradition.

Broadcast Dates Across Four Seasons

The Bridge moved between networks and countries over seven years. The schedule below tracks the main runs.

Season Nordic broadcast UK broadcast
1 Autumn 2011 Spring, BBC Four
2 Autumn 2013 Early 2014
3 Autumn 2015 November 2015
4 1 January 2018 From 11 May 2018, BBC Two

The first season aired on SVT1 and DR1 in the autumn of 2011, then on BBC Four the following spring. The second ran in the Nordic countries in autumn 2013 and in the UK in early 2014. The third aired in Denmark, Sweden and Finland in autumn 2015 and in the UK that November. The fourth premiered on 1 January 2018 in the Nordic countries and ran weekly on BBC Two from 11 May 2018.

A Joint Investigation, Two Countries

A joint production between Sweden’s SVT and Denmark’s DR, it has been shown in more than 100 countries.

That reach is the tell. The Bridge is not a niche import that found a small devoted audience. It traveled because the central mechanic — two legal systems, one killer, no clean authority — generates conflict without anyone having to invent it.

The border does the work. Every scene of cooperation is also a scene of friction, because neither detective can simply take the case. That is a structural gift, and the show spends it well across the first two seasons before the cast changes.

Kim Bodnia and Thure Lindhardt

The handoff from Bodnia to Lindhardt is the show’s biggest risk. Writing out a lead in a series built on a two-hander means rebuilding the thing that made it work. The Bridge does it by keeping Helin’s Saga as the fixed point and letting the Danish side rotate around her.

That choice holds the series together. Saga is the constant, and the show understands that her particular way of working is the actual subject — not the killers, who are interchangeable by design. Crime, mystery and drama are the listed genres, but the real engine is a partnership that keeps getting reset.

What the Score Reflects

The published audience score is 8.1/10 on TMDB, from 725 votes. That number is about right, and it is about right for a specific reason: The Bridge is more consistent than it is surprising.

The first two seasons are the strongest, because the Rohde and Norén pairing has time to settle into something lived-in. The later seasons are still good television, but they are rebuilding a chemistry the audience already had. That is a real cost, and the score should carry it.

What matters most is the premise. A body on a bridge is a clean idea, and The Bridge never wastes it. Four seasons, 38 episodes, seven years, and the show never has to explain why two detectives from two countries would work the same case. The border explains it every time.
