Dua Lipa’s third album runs 11 tracks and 36 minutes, built around a simple pitch: dance-pop with sun on it. The record chases the same disco-pop high that made Future Nostalgia a hit. Radical Optimism gets there in flashes, but not as often as that album did.

Houdini Through Illusion

The album opens with End of an Era, a brisk 3:16 mission statement, before Houdini takes over as the record’s clearest single. Training Season follows with a confident, lively pulse that reviewers flagged as one of the set’s best.

These Walls and Whatcha Doing settle into a smoother, more mid-tempo lane. French Exit keeps the pace up without adding much new. Illusion, the seventh track, lifts the energy back up and lands as another standout, all glow and forward motion.

Falling Forever to Happy for You

Falling Forever, at 3:43, is the longest stretch before the finish and one of the album’s flatter moments. Anything for Love, the shortest song here at 2:22, is tighter and sharper for it, and reviewers singled it out. Maria brings warmth and one of the record’s more memorable hooks.

The closer, Happy for You, runs 4:06, the album’s longest track, and ends things on a fuller, more open note than most of what precedes it.

What Critics Said

Six songs earn the praise: Houdini, Training Season, Illusion, Anything for Love, Maria and Happy for You. That is more than half the track list singled out by name, which says something about where the album’s real strength sits — not in a wall-to-wall run, but in specific peaks.

One line from a review aggregated on Metacritic sums up the split judgment: “Radical Optimism is oddly incoherent.” Other reviewers heard something brighter in the same songs, praising a record full of quick, lively energy and star presence from Dua Lipa. Both readings can be true of the same album at once.

Metacritic’s combined score sits at 72/100, a mixed-to-positive read that lines up with what’s on the page: real hooks, real presence, but a record that reviewers say never quite finds its own shape.

That comparison to Future Nostalgia hangs over every track here. It’s not without reason. Dua Lipa built that record into a career-defining hit, and Radical Optimism was always going to be measured against it.

The production is polished and bright, and it mostly delivers on mood.

What it doesn’t deliver, from start to finish, is writing that feels singular rather than pleasant. Houdini, Training Season, Illusion, Anything for Love, Maria and Happy for You show what the record can do at its best. The rest fills space adequately rather than making a case for itself.

Radical Optimism is a good pop record with a great pop record’s ambition and about two-thirds of its follow-through. The best six tracks would make a truly strong short collection on their own.

As a full album, it’s shorter on identity than its title suggests.
