A Diablo 4 player named Dioxide has found something Blizzard didn’t bother to announce: the game now carries Diablo 2’s Rune Word recipes, and the Stealth chestpiece can be made exactly as it was two decades ago.
The discovery comes during Season of Hell’s Legacy, which celebrates the series’ 30th anniversary by bringing back Deckard Cain (in a dream) and three of Diablo 2’s most famous bosses: Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto. Each has new models and attacks. But Blizzard didn’t say it would do more than a nostalgic storyline for season 15.
What Dioxide found was that certain Runes, when dropped into Diablo 4’s crafting table, the Horadric Cube, produce something unexpected. Put two specific Runes and a low-quality chestpiece into the cube, and the recipe shows “???” instead of a standard entry. Click the transmute button, and out pops the Stealth chestpiece, a Unique item from Diablo 2.
The recipe matches the original method. The stats are different, but the item carries the same relative power because it has two more stats than a normal Unique. Dioxide shared the finding online, and now everyone is wondering what other recipes are hiding in the season.
Finding the Cow Level
Blizzard has been leaving things for players to find on their own since the Lord of Hatred expansion. Nobody knew the cow level would actually appear until someone found it. Players keep finding things that weren’t announced.
The Whimsyshire Hint
The recent trailer offers a pretty obvious hint for Diablo 3’s rainbow-colored Whimsyshire level, complete with a creepy teddy bear. It’s not clear how to access it yet, but the pattern suggests someone will figure it out before the end of the day.
What Comes Next
The question now is whether Blizzard has hidden more than just the Rune Words. The Whimsyshire hint in the trailer points toward Diablo 3, but the Stealth chestpiece shows the company can dig into the entire series’ history.
Dioxide’s discovery is the kind of moment that makes long-running games feel alive. It’s not a patch note or a livestream reveal. It’s a player finding something nobody told them existed, and sharing it with the world.
The Cow Level and the Rune Words
