Opening the Premise
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wants to be the biggest monster movie ever made. It mostly succeeds at being the loudest one. The film reunites the two titans for a war between humanity and the creatures themselves, and the scale is genuinely overwhelming. But the spectacle often buries the story beneath it.
The premise is simple. Godzilla and Kong are locked in a fight for supremacy over the planet, and the human characters exist mainly to watch and occasionally get in the way. The film leans heavily on action set pieces, and those sequences are where it finds its footing. The destruction is rendered with stunning detail, and the battles between the two monsters feel genuinely epic.
Where the Script Struggles
But the script struggles to keep up. The human plot threads are thin, and the emotional stakes feel hollow next to the towering beasts. Characters are introduced and forgotten within minutes. The film’s attempts to build tension around the fate of the world fall flat because the movie is too busy moving to slow down and let the audience care.
Here is what works:
- The visual effects are some of the best in the genre.
- The action sequences are well-choreographed and exciting.
- The music swells at all the right moments.
Here is what doesn’t:
- The dialogue is often delivered in service of the next explosion.
- The pacing suffers from a bloated runtime that could have been trimmed.
- The human drama never quite connects.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a technical marvel that never fully becomes a compelling story. It is worth seeing for the sheer spectacle, but the substance underneath is thinner than advertised. The film knows how to blow things up, but it forgets why we care about the people caught in the middle.
The final score is 4.7 out of 10.
