CBS’s virtual press day on Wednesday, September 16, brought an unexpected announcement from the Marshals team regarding Season 2. The news concerned a returning fan favorite, with Jefferson White stepping back into the role of Jimmy Hurdstrom.

Folks, it’s true: Jimmy is saying goodbye to the 6666 ranch and Texas, and he’s heading back to Montana to be with Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) in Season 2 of the CBS spin-off.

Jimmy’s Return To Montana

CBS confirmed that Yellowstone fans can expect Jimmy to be the same “good-hearted yet rough-around-the-edges ranch hand who evolved from a troubled criminal into a resilient, proud cowboy.”

White himself spoke about the return in a statement. “I’m thrilled to dive into the world of Marshals and continue exploring the American West,” he said. “The cast and crew are stacked full of my favorite actors and filmmakers, and I’m honored to join them. Jimmy and I have been through a lot together, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for us.”

Why Jimmy Is Coming Back

Grimes addressed the reunion directly during the Marshals press day panel. “We’re just trying to make the best show that we can, and Spencer [Hudnut, showrunner] and I have a lot of conversations about how to do that,” he said. “And we try to come up with ideas for stories that we feel our audience would really enjoy, and Jimmy came up. It’s just a character that I think everybody loves so much.”

Grimes noted that Yellowstone has characters audiences love or hate, but Jimmy lands in the love camp. “There are characters in Yellowstone you either love or hate, but I think universally everyone sort of loved Jimmy,” he said. “And personally, I just really liked working with Jefferson. He’s a great guy, great to be around, good energy, great actor. So it was born out of, ‘How do we delight our audience a little bit more this season and bring somebody back that everyone misses?'”

Hudnut added that Jimmy’s arrival fits the show’s larger arc. “Jimmy’s coming to East Camp. He’ll be spending time in Montana. He’ll be getting to know this team, and this newfound family for Casey,” he said. “We have such a great roster of actors. It’s fun to just keep adding to that.”

What Remains Unknown

Not much is known about what White’s recurring role will entail beyond the synopsis for Episode 201. The episode suggests Kayce’s son Tate is taken hostage, which puts Kayce in a desperate race to save him.

A number of queries come up from the material: how has Jimmy fared since Yellowstone? What part does he take on in Marshals? Could he end up assisting Kayce in saving his son?

We can’t wait to find out.

The Bottom Line

The event is a get-together born of affection for the people watching. Grimes explained that the concept arose from a wish to please the audience, and White’s remark mirrors that same fondness.
