The WTA Finals are moving to Charlotte, North Carolina for the 2027 season. The Women’s tour signed a three-year deal to host its end-of-season event at Spectrum Center, the home of the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets.
The announcement came Wednesday, 16 September 2026, UK time. The WTA wants the event to become the “Super Bowl for women’s sports.”
Charlotte as New Host
Charlotte will host the WTA Finals from 2027 through 2029. The deal covers the top eight singles players and doubles teams at the end of each season.
The move follows five consecutive years in Singapore from 2014 to 2018. Since then, the Finals have been held at six different venues. This year’s event is in Indian Wells, California, in November.
A controversial deal to stage the event in Saudi Arabia ended a year early. That shift meant the 2026 Finals were moved to Indian Wells.
Camillo’s Ambition
WTA chair Valerie Camillo laid out the ambition behind the move. She wants the Finals to be more than a tennis championship.
“Our ambition is for the WTA Finals to be not only the premier championship in women’s tennis, but one of the defining global events in women’s sports,” Camillo said.
“We want to create the Super Bowl for women’s sports. And not just the competition, but an event that is the annual gathering for women’s tennis, women’s sports, and women’s sport business.”
Camillo pointed to growing audiences and investment. She said female athletes are increasingly at the center of sports and culture around the world.
“And women’s tennis has helped lead and define that progress for more than 50 years. And we believe our biggest championship should reflect the scale of this moment.”
Taking Control
Camillo said the WTA will operate the Finals itself in the future. The tour has previously let others run the event.
“The WTA has always owned the WTA finals, but now going forward, we’re going to operate it too,” Camillo said.
“We’re taking control of the creation of the revenues and the controlling of the expenses and the delivery of the entire thing. And that allows us to control our own destiny.”
Charlotte’s Foundation
Will Pitts, CEO of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, welcomed the event. He said the move is a transformational moment for the city.
“This is a transformational moment for Charlotte and for our organization,” Pitts said.
“Bringing the WTA Finals to our city shows what Charlotte has become as a world-class sports destination, and we are incredibly grateful to the WTA for their trust and partnership in making this vision a reality.”
Pitts also noted the support from local government.
“None of this happens without the support of our partners at the state, city, and county levels, and we are deeply thankful for their commitment to growing Charlotte’s sports footprint.”

The move to Charlotte follows a pattern of frequent venue changes.
The Deal’s Scope
The WTA is also relocating its global headquarters to Charlotte.
The three-year deal runs from 2027 to 2029. It covers the Finals for that period.
The WTA’s stated goal is to build the “preeminent championship experience in women’s sport.”
The event will be live on Sky Sports Tennis in the UK. This year’s Finals at Indian Wells run from November 8-15.
