Owen Hendricks and the Georgetown Law Pipeline
The premise is a good one. Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) graduates from Georgetown Law, joins the CIA, and gets handed the kind of work nobody trained him for. A synopsis built on a daredevil young attorney leaping unprepared into international espionage is a clean hook.
Alexi Hawley created the series for Netflix. The first season follows Owen as an Eastern European asset threatens extortion if she is not freed from prison, dragging him into convoluted international politics.
A Cast Doing Heavier Lifting Than the Script
Centineo leads, and the supporting bench is the show’s real asset. Colton Dunn plays Lester Kitchens. Aarti Mann is Violet Ebner. Fivel Stewart is Hannah Copeland. Kristian Bruun is Janus Ferber.
Maddie Hasson carries the trickiest role, credited as Nichka Lashin/Karolina/Marta — one performer, three names, which tells you most of what you need to know about how the show handles its asset.

What the Spy Work Actually Costs
The show wants to be a procedural about a lawyer out of his depth. It gets halfway there. Owen negotiates with the asset, finds himself at odds with menacing individuals and groups, and risks his life doing his job. That is the engine.
Jang Kyun and the Second-Season Reset
Adding Yoo is the clearest signal the show intended to widen its map. It did not get the chance to finish the thought.
The Verdict on 14 Episodes
The Recruit is a solid, unremarkable spy show with a genuinely appealing lead and a premise sturdier than its execution. Centineo is the reason to watch. The writing, in this paper’s view, is why it never broke out.
Two seasons is a short run. It is also, for this show, about right.
