Who Is the Mysterious New Character in Danganronpa 2×2’s Slayhem Route?

Danganronpa 2×2's Slayhem route adds a mysterious new character fans call 'John Danganronpa.' Here's what we know before January 14.

A shadowy new student stands on Jabberwock Island as an unsettling trailer teases Danganronpa 2×2's Slayhem route.

Danganronpa 2×2 has a new face, and fans don’t know what to make of him. Spike Chunsoft revealed the mysterious character in a new trailer for the remake’s alternate “Slayhem” route, which arrives with the game on January 14 after a delay into 2027. The character doesn’t match any pre-existing student from the series, and the studio isn’t saying who he is.

The trailer, shown during a recent Nintendo Direct, dedicated a surprising amount of time to the new story path. Slayhem is set on Jabberwock Island, the tropical setting of the original Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, but it introduces new murder mysteries for the returning cast. Spike Chunsoft is keeping the new victims and killers hidden, though fans are already combing the footage for clues.

The New Arrival on Jabberwock Island

The biggest reveal is that the Slayhem route includes at least one new teenager joining Monokuma’s killing game. His design is generic enough that his Ultimate Talent is unclear. He might not even be from Hope’s Peak Academy, the school that hosts the other characters.

Spike Chunsoft’s revamped website for the game makes no direct reference to him. The company is keeping his identity close to its chest for now.

One theory circulating among fans is that the character could be Ryota Mitarai, the Ultimate Animator from the Danganronpa 3 anime. That would connect him to the larger Danganronpa story, but Ryota is notoriously more meek than this new character appears to be. The theory also seems too easy — if it were true, the studio might have just said so.

Monokuma’s New Rules

The trailer shows more than just a new face. Monokuma, the homicidal robot bear running the killing game, appears to be changing the rules. Multiple characters mention “Slayhem” items and “weird cards” they received from the mastermind, suggesting a new mechanic designed to provoke violence among the cast.

Monokuma is also shown wielding a gun, pointing it at someone off-screen and seemingly executing a student over the island’s volcano. The trailer even shows the Class Trial courtroom, where players solve murder cases, catching fire. Whatever is happening on Jabberwock Island this time is more chaotic than the original game.

The original Danganronpa 2 has also been visually updated from its PlayStation Portable origins. Even the console and PC ports of that game looked rough when upscaled to bigger screens, so the polish is welcome.

Five Islands, Five Newcomers?

Another detail from the trailer raises questions. At the beginning, an ad plays on a TV screen mentioning “five islands each with its own unique character.” Jabberwock is an archipelago of five distinct islands, and in the original game, each one served as a stage for a different murder mystery.

It’s unclear if the ad means each island has its own distinct aesthetic, or if there’s literally a new character for each of them. We reached out to Spike Chunsoft for clarification and will update if we hear back.

Hajime Hinata’s Fate

One theory: original protagonist Hajime Hinata might die in the Slayhem route. If that happens, the new character could take over as the playable detective in the new story. Or he could be another antagonist who makes things worse for the students of Hope’s Peak Academy.

For now, fans are calling him John Danganronpa. The name follows the same pattern as John Persona, the nickname for Persona 6’s leaked bowl-cut protagonist.

The question is whether this new arrival will feel like a weird Scrappy Doo character bolted onto the side of Danganronpa 2, or a meaningful addition to the story.

Danganronpa 2×2 launches on January 14. We’ll find out then.
