The Protector: Netflix’s First Turkish Original, Reviewed

Netflix's first Turkish original, The Protector, ran four seasons and 32 episodes from 2018 to 2020. A look at Hakan, Zeynep and why the show still holds up.

A protector springs forward through a narrow street as he shields a young girl from unseen foes.

Netflix’s first Turkish original series arrived in December 2018 with a shopkeeper, a secret order and a city to save. The Protector ran four seasons and 32 episodes, ending on 9 July 2020. It never became the global phenomenon the streamer’s later international titles did, but it built a steady following on the strength of its lead and a premise that mixed modern Istanbul with an old inheritance.

Hakan Demir and the Loyal Ones

The Protector stars Çağatay Ulusoy as Hakan Demir, an Istanbul shopkeeper whose ordinary life collapses when his adoptive father, Neşet, is killed. Hakan learns he is connected to an ancient secret order whose duty is to protect the city. He is the Protector, a hero tasked with killing the Immortal and stopping the city’s destruction.

The show was created by Binnur Karaevli, and the first season was directed by Umut Aral, Gönenç Uyanık and Can Evrenol. It adapts Nilüfer İpek Gökdel’s 2016 mystery novel Karakalem ve Bir Delikanlının Tuhaf Hikayesi, which translates as A Strange Story of Charcoal and a Young Man.

That source explains the show’s best instinct. This is not a superhero story dropped onto Istanbul from outside. The Protector treats the city as the thing worth defending, and it treats the inheritance as a burden before it treats it as a power.

Zeynep, Kemal and the Order

Hakan does not carry the duty alone. He is helped by Kemal and Kemal’s daughter, Zeynep, members of the secret order of the Loyal Ones, who are dedicated to assisting the Protector. Hazar Ergüçlü plays Zeynep Erman, and the partnership between Hakan and Zeynep gives the series its working spine.

Okan Yalabık plays Faysal Erdem. Funda Eryiğit plays Nisan. Boran Kuzum plays Okhan, also known as Hekim Efendi.

The cast is the reason the show holds together across four seasons. Ulusoy has to sell a man who never asked for any of this, and the series leans on him hard. Ergüçlü’s Zeynep is the more interesting figure on paper, because she belongs to the order before Hakan does and has to decide what loyalty costs.

A Ten-Episode First Season

Season one runs ten episodes and landed on Netflix on 14 December 2018. Season two runs eight episodes and followed on 26 April 2019.

On 10 June 2019, the series was renewed for seasons 3 and 4. The fourth and last season was released on 9 July 2020. The full run is 32 episodes across four seasons, and the show is listed under Action & Adventure and Sci-Fi & Fantasy.

The renewal for two seasons at once was a show of confidence from Netflix. The final season arrived in the middle of 2020. That matters more than it sounds. A genre series that knows its ending can spend its last episodes paying off what it set up instead of protecting itself for a fifth year.

He is helped by Kemal and his daughter, Zeynep, members of the secret order of the Loyal Ones, who are dedicated to assisting the Protector.

Where the Show Works

The Protector works best when it stays small. Hakan as a shopkeeper, the order as a set of obligations rather than a set of costumes, Istanbul as a place people actually live in. The show’s central mechanic is clean: there is an Immortal, there is a Protector, and one has to kill the other before the city falls.

That is a strong engine for a fantasy series because it gives every season a clock. The Protector does not need to explain its own mythology endlessly. It needs Hakan to accept what he is and then act on it.

The adaptation choice is also smart. Nilüfer İpek Gökdel’s novel is a mystery, and the series keeps that structure underneath the fantasy. Hakan spends the early going finding out what he is, which means the audience finds out with him.

Where It Slips

Four seasons is a long time to sustain a premise built on one duty. The Protector’s middle stretch has to keep finding reasons Hakan cannot simply finish the job, and those reasons get thinner as the show goes on. The order’s rules start to feel like plot machinery rather than belief.

The show also carries the weight of being an early Netflix Turkish original. It was made when the streamer was still testing what a local production could look like at global scale, and some of that caution shows in how safe the storytelling plays. The Protector rarely takes a swing that would risk confusing an audience watching with subtitles.

None of this breaks the series. It just keeps it from being more than a solid one.

What the Score Says

The audience score sits at 7.2 out of 10, drawn from 483 votes on TMDB. That number feels right, and it is not a knock. The Protector is not a landmark of the streaming era, and it is not trying to be.

It is a well-made, well-cast adaptation of a Turkish novel that treats its city as worth protecting and its hero as a man with a job he did not choose. It ran four seasons and 32 episodes, from 14 December 2018 to 9 July 2020. That is a better record than most fantasy series manage.

What holds up is the pairing at the center. Hakan and Zeynep, the shopkeeper and the Loyal One, are the reason to start the show and the reason to finish it. What dates is the caution around them.
