Debby Ryan, the actress who rose to fame on Disney Channel, has revealed she suffered a “life-altering brain injury a few years ago.” She made the admission during a recent interview for Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals video series.
The Injury and Its Aftermath
Ryan described the incident as involving “sustained shaking over a minute of time.” That shaking, she said, created a split in her identity: “pre-incident Debby and post-incident Debby.”
“I had a pretty crazy life-altering brain injury a few years ago, and I was out of commission for like six months, and I went to this neurological rehab for like six months,” she shared. “Went and did this fringe science treatment that was like really sci-fi and crazy, and I’ve done it a couple times.”
The treatments helped her get “back online,” but she said “there are some things that just did not come back.” Specifically, she pointed to the fifth concussion as the moment things worsened: “After the fifth concussion, the brain injury made things significantly worse.”
Migraines and Sensory Overload
Ryan said her condition means she sees and thinks better with her eyes closed. She described the world as “really loud and too bright,” and said the visual data she takes in “can be so distracting and so loud.”
“The migraines were significantly worsened by that,” she said. “If there is a thing that can make things really singular, I like that.”
She also credited her support system for helping her through the changes. “I feel really fortunate that I have an amazing team of people around me who sort of reminded me who I am and was and also held a lot of space for that to change, potentially permanently, and love me through that,” she said.
Her Career So Far
Ryan previously starred in Disney’s Suite Life on Deck and Jessie. More recently, she appeared in the film Insatiable.
She shares one child with her husband, Twenty One Pilots drummer Josh Dun.
