Carmy Berzatto inherits a sandwich shop and a debt he did not earn. That is the engine of The Bear, Christopher Storer’s comedy-drama for FX on Hulu, and it never stops running. The first season arrived in full on June 23, 2022. Jeremy Allen White plays Carmy, an award-winning chef who leaves Michelin-starred kitchens in New York and comes home to Chicago to run The Original Beef of Chicagoland after his older brother Michael’s suicide.

A Rundown Kitchen on North Lincoln
The Beef is failing before Carmy walks in. He finds unresolved debts, a kitchen that needs work, and a staff that did not ask for him. Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, Michael’s best friend and the restaurant’s de facto manager, who calls Carmy “Cousin” and resents every change. Ayo Edebiri is Sydney Adamu, a trained young chef who signs on as sous-chef.
Liza Colón-Zayas plays Tina Marrero, an acerbic line cook who resists and then trains. Lionel Boyce is Marcus Brooks, the bread baker who becomes a pastry chef under Carmy and Sydney. Abby Elliott is Natalie “Sugar” Berzatto, Carmy’s sister, the reluctant co-owner and business manager. Matty Matheson plays Neil Fak, a childhood friend who fixes things. Edwin Lee Gibson is Ebraheim, a Somali veteran line cook close to Tina.
The Crew Becomes the Family
The show’s claim is that this rough crew turns into Carmy’s chosen family, and the writing earns it by refusing to rush. The Beef becomes The Bear, a fine dining restaurant, but the conversion is not a montage. It costs money the family does not have and patience the staff does not always offer.
The series treats the physical, emotional and financial demands of restaurant life as the actual subject, which is why so many working culinary professionals have praised its sense of urgency and its depiction of the job. That praise matters. Television kitchens are usually sets. This one reads as a workplace, with tickets, burns, and a hierarchy that shifts when a new chef arrives. The Bear is not selling food as art. It is selling labor.
Five Seasons, Forty-Six Episodes
The Bear ran five seasons and 46 episodes. Season two came in June 2023, season three in June 2024, season four in June 2025. A standalone special episode landed on May 5, 2026, starring Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal and focused only on their characters. The fifth and final season was released on June 25, 2026.
That is a fast production schedule for a show this controlled. The early run is the strongest: the first season knows exactly what it is, a story about a man who cannot sit still and a crew that will not be managed. By the end, the show has more people to serve and less room to serve them.
Why the Accolades Are Not Noise
The Bear has won 22 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and five Golden Globe Awards, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. The series has drawn critical acclaim for its performances, writing, directing, visual style, soundtrack and production values. Those categories are not a marketing list here. The performances are the reason the kitchen scenes work at all, and the soundtrack and editing are the reason a ticket printer can feel like a threat.
The comedy label is the part worth arguing about. The Bear is often not funny. It is a drama with comic timing, and the awards bodies put it in the comedy category anyway. That is a category question, not a quality question, and it does not change what the show does well.
What the Show Gets Right
The Bear is at its best when it stays inside the restaurant and lets the work speak. Carmy’s grief over Michael is the spine, and the show never resolves it, which is the honest choice. The debts do not vanish. The kitchen does not become calm. Sydney, Marcus, Tina and Richie each get a real arc, and none of them exist only to serve Carmy’s.
The weakness is the later stretch. Five seasons in four years is a lot of story for a show built on one man’s inability to rest, and the final run has to carry both the restaurant and the ending. The standalone special in May 2026 is a strange piece of scheduling, a detour between seasons rather than a capstone.
Still, this is one of the few series of its era that treats work as the thing people do with their lives rather than a backdrop for their feelings. The Bear earns its reputation. The kitchen is the character. Score: 8.5 of 10.
