On September 9, 2026, Apple revealed the Apple Watch Series 12, which carries a redesigned Health Sensing System, a readiness score, and Audio Intelligence features designed with privacy at the forefront.
Apple’s headline feature pairs the Health Sensing System with the S11 chip, which the company claims offers the most precise heart rate sensing ever seen in a wearable. It also brings new readings of higher-frequency heart rate and HRV, along with an entirely new readiness score.
The Health Sensing System
The optical heart sensor on Apple Watch Series 12 uses larger, power-efficient green LEDs to measure heart rate every five seconds, all day long. The company says that constant passive reading is what makes the Exercise and Move Activity rings more accurate.
Heart rate variability, also known as HRV, is being measured up to 24 times more frequently than before. The Apple Watch offers two readings: Recovery HRV, which tracks daily stress and recovery signals, and overall HRV, which gives broader health insights, including a look at cardiovascular health. In general, higher variability points to better recovery, while lower values signal stress.
“Apple Watch Series 12 is the most advanced health and fitness companion we’ve ever created,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Apple Watch Product Marketing.
The Health app on iPhone is getting a redesign for later this year, and it will include a Longevity tab. That tab features a Health Age feature, which displays how metrics compare against a user’s age.
Readiness Score
Users receive a single 0-10 score that draws on recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep data. That number then points to one of four possible recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.
Throughout the day, the readiness score adjusts as fresh data arrives, which means a demanding workout or a change in daytime vitals can alter it significantly. Built from information gathered through the Apple Heart and Movement Study, the algorithm also drew on the work of exercise scientists and physicians who collaborated with Apple.
Audio Intelligence and Siri
Later this year, the S11 chip will power Audio Intelligence features that let users recall important points from talks and notice significant sounds, all while keeping privacy, security, and accessibility advances central to how they work.
Apple Intelligence now powers Siri AI on Apple Watch with watchOS 27, giving the device personal context understanding and broad world knowledge at the wrist.
Design and Materials
The Apple Watch Series 12 arrives in several colors and finishes. The aluminum models come in dark bronze, black, light gold, and space gray. For those wanting something more distinctive, there is radiant gold and natural titanium. Ceramic options are available in pearl white and night blue.
Aluminum models feature Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is tougher than any smartwatch glass and 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X of previous aluminum models. The device is available to pre-order today, with availability beginning Friday, September 18.
Battery Life and Charging
The Apple Watch Series 12 provides up to 24 hours of battery life for everyday use. Its outdoor workout endurance has increased to up to 10 hours, a rise of 25 percent over earlier models.
Comparison: Apple Watch Series 12 vs. Previous Aluminum Models
| Feature | Apple Watch Series 12 | Previous Aluminum Models |
|---|---|---|
| Heart rate measurement frequency | Every 5 seconds, all day | Not specified |
| HRV measurement frequency | Up to 24 times more often | Baseline |
| Glass protection | Ceramic Shield 2 | Ion-X |
| Outdoor workout battery life | Up to 10 hours | 25 percent less |
| Everyday battery life | Up to 24 hours | Up to 24 hours |
| Readiness score | Yes | No |
According to Apple, a study involving more than 1,000 people from a varied group was carried out using scientific methods, and it found that the new heart rate sensing accuracy on Apple Watch was higher than what leading wearables showed, across all devices included in the comparison.
Existing features carried over into the Apple Watch Series 12 include the ECG app, sleep apnea notifications, Fall Detection, and Emergency SOS. The company says its wearable is the most complete on offer when it comes to health, fitness, and safety.
People can now place a pre-order for the device, which will begin shipping on September 18.
