The Way of Whispers Is Now Official, Bringing Bolton-Flavored Intrigue to Westeros

Game of Thrones: Legends adds the Bolton-style Way of Whispers faction in a major update with new champions, stats, and faction restructuring.

The new faction arrives in Game of Thrones: Legends as part of a massive restructuring of the puzzle game’s team-building system. Zynga is reorganizing the game’s factions to give every Champion a meaningful home and make smaller groups more attractive to build around.

The Book Ramsay

George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire portrays Ramsay Bolton very differently from how television viewers know him. In the books, Bolton is described as physically repulsive, volatile, deeply insecure, and almost feral in his cruelty.

The show version had charisma and calculated cool, but the book character lacks that polish. Roose Bolton frequently treats his son’s impulsiveness as a liability. On the page, the Bastard of the Dreadfort is a much less polished villain.

Unlike the show, the books keep Ramsay alive. That means he could have a major impact on the events of The Winds of Winter. He is also at the center of one of the saga’s biggest unresolved mysteries: the authorship of the infamous Pink Letter, which claims Stannis has been defeated and threatens Jon Snow.

The Way Of Whispers Roster

Oddly enough, Game of Thrones: Legends does not contain any actual Bolton Champions — at least not yet. The Way of Whispers faction draws its style from the Boltons, even though none of its members actually come from House Bolton.

The faction includes Champions that adhere to a “Bolton-style” of combat, primarily focused on Bleed effects and “dodging attacks as enemies defeat themselves.” The current lineup is built around kits that include those Bleed and Whispers mechanics.

  • Aemond Targaryen
  • Cersei Lannister (Queen Of The 7 Kingdoms)
  • Osha
  • Petyr Baelish
  • Tyrion Lannister (Lord Of Casterly Rock)

Since there are no actual Boltons in this lineup, it opens up room for future Champions to be added to this faction, including Ramsay or Roose. Those who want to follow what happens to the family in the books can at least find their fighting style represented here.

The Larger Restructuring

The Way of Whispers is part of a much larger update, and Zynga is adding a whole new faction called Sun’s Dominion at the same time.

Beyond the Wall is seeing a push by the Free Folk, while the Greyjoys are moving into Lords of the Tide, and the Brotherhood Without Banners has grown to become the Scattered Banners. The update brings in 17 new dual-faction Legendary Champions, greatly raising the number of possible team pairings.

A Champion’s standing with their current faction remains untouched by these alterations, which add to a Champion’s attributes rather than taking anything away from them.

Balance And New Stats

The patch brings balancing adjustments aimed at preventing the added complexity from spiraling out of control. When teams trigger several faction bonuses, the rewards they gain will grow smaller with each one, rather than stacking without limit.

To stop certain groups from holding an unfair edge, faction buffs are being brought into line with one another. Gem Resistance, Crit Resistance, and Resilience are the three new stats being added.

Gem damage, Poison, and defensive abilities all get adjusted in this update, with the aim of making faction-based team building much more substantial while keeping multi-faction squads from becoming too strong.

Launch Timing

The faction changes aim to correct a thin roster and a shortage of top talent. The wider revamp ensures that every Champion gets a relevant faction, while it also makes smaller groups more appealing to build around.

Later this month, Game of Thrones: Legends players will get an update that makes team composition more strategic and varied, and it marks a massive improvement that fans of the game will certainly appreciate.

The Way of Whispers hints at the Bolton family’s influence arriving in the game, even though the characters themselves are not present yet. This news is a tease for fans of the Boltons specifically.

Ramsay and Roose are still waiting to be added, in both the books and on the roster. However, the group that follows their approach has been confirmed as coming soon.
