The subreddit offers a break from social media’s relentless overselling. Most people do not live lives of constant international travel and flawless selfies. The Mildly Interesting community reminds readers that ordinary moments still carry value.
One post shows a cat named Ganon, adopted from a “hoarder situation” at around 3 years old. Deep scars turned his fur white. Another shows a woman’s footprints imprinted on the grass where she spends time at her dog’s grave. A pinecone in a shower closes when wet and opens again when dry.
Not all content online is harmful, but toxic profiles exist. According to NYU’s Center for Conflict and Cooperation, only 3% of social media profiles are toxic, yet these pages are responsible for one-third of the content posted online.
Besser suggests loosening your grip on planning to find more interesting experiences. She advises readers to “pay attention to the sparks of the interesting in your mind, seeing what lights you up and makes you curious.”
Ordinary Life, Honestly Shown
The subreddit’s photos are refreshing because they are honest. One poster shared a tattoo whose scales puff up when their allergies act up. A commenter on the post clarified it is not a koi tattoo but a Koinobori, a koi-shaped Japanese windsock. The aside is playful and small, the kind of detail that rarely makes headlines.
Social media has created unrealistic expectations. You must look flawless, smile every moment, and never complain. But everyone wakes up with messy hair. Everyone has boring days. Pages like Mildly Interesting exist to show that life is not always riveting. Sometimes it is a bit boring.
