Police Squad! ran for one season, six episodes, from March 4 to July 8, 1982, on ABC. It was a parody of police dramas, full of farce and sight gags, starring Leslie Nielsen as Lieutenant Frank Drebin and Alan North as Captain Ed Hocken. The show was created by Jerry Zucker, David Zucker and Jim Abrahams, the trio behind Airplane! (1980).
The Premise
The officers led by Drebin mess up nearly every investigation they undertake. The show mocks police procedurals alongside many other television shows and films, using Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker’s customary sight gags, wordplay and non sequiturs. Its style bears a resemblance to the Lee Marvin police show M Squad, especially its opening credits, and also to the late 1960s series Felony Squad.
The Cast
Drebin is a lieutenant detective with Police Squad, and Nielsen plays him. Jerry Zucker said the name Drebin came from a random search through the phone book. The group first encountered Nielsen during work on Airplane!, and they felt his sense of humor fit their own approach. They believed he would be ideal for the part because the character makes fun of the TV drama roles Nielsen had taken on shows such as The Bold Ones: The Protectors and S.W.A.T.
Captain Ed Hocken is played by Alan North, and he is Drebin’s boss. The part was performed on screen by George Kennedy. Peter Lupus takes the role of Norberg, an officer working beneath Drebin who is rather foolish. In the films, the character was given the name “Nordberg”, and he was played by O.J. Simpson. Ed Williams portrays Ted Olson, a lab worker at Police Squad. Before joining the show, Williams had spent many years teaching science and had some earlier acting work behind him. Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker were struck by his performance.
William Duell plays Johnny the Snitch, a shoeshiner who acts as an informant for Drebin on multiple cases. Johnny is the only recurring character from Police Squad! to not appear in any of The Naked Gun films. Ronald “Tiny Ron” Taylor plays Al, an abnormally tall officer whose head is always placed out of frame. Rex Hamilton is credited in every episode as “Abraham Lincoln.”
How It Worked
In March 1982, the show debuted as a mid-season replacement, airing for four episodes before being removed from the schedule entirely. The remaining two episodes were then moved to the summer lineup, where they replaced the usual summer reruns. Critical acclaim did not save it, and ABC canceled the show.
Joyce Brothers played herself in the fourth episode and in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!. Robert Goulet, one of the “special guest stars” killed during the title sequence, plays the villain Quentin Hapsburg in The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear.
Legacy
After Police Squad!, a string of films emerged, including The Naked Gun from 1988 through 1994, plus the 2025 follow-up The Naked Gun. Across all of them, just three performers returned: Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin, Ed Williams as Ted Olson, and Ronald “Tiny Ron” Taylor as Al.
The show’s influence lived on through its films.

Six episodes were enough for Police Squad! to stake its claim in comedy history, even though it failed to find an audience when it first aired. Its films carried forward its legacy.
