Maria Sten has a confession to make about Reacher. The actress, who plays Frances Neagley in the new Prime Video spinoff, says shaking hands with Alan Ritchson’s Reacher in the season finale was her favorite moment of the entire season. That might seem odd. The handshake is a simple gesture, barely a beat in a tense story about a cult called Echo Canyon and the death of Neagley’s childhood friend Tommy Crane. But Sten sees something bigger in it.
“I think it really is so pivotal and shows so much courage,” Sten told DECIDER during a recent studio visit. “She’s been through the wringer and so much has happened to her. She’s lost her father at this point and has to really create a new life for herself. And I do think it’s also a nice way of taking advantage of the whole relationship that we’ve set up in three seasons of Reacher.”
The Handshake and the Same Old Neagley
The moment is tender, but it does not change the dynamic. Sten’s own reading of the scene is that Neagley remains exactly the same old Neagley who will sass Reacher. “What I love most about that scene is that even though she’s gone on this whole journey and had so much growth and we now wonder what’s next for Neagley, she is still the same old Neagley who’s gonna sass Reacher,” she teased.
That tension — growth and stasis at once — is the heart of what makes the scene work. It is a quiet moment that lands because it respects the character rather than reinventing her.
Passing the Torch and the Call Sheet
The spinoff introduces new faces: Detective Hudson “Rats” Riley (Greyston Holt), Renee Birdwhistle (Adeline Rudolph), and Keno (Jasper Jones). None of them exist in Lee Child’s books. That means Holt, Rudolph, and Jones did not have a blueprint to draw on. “Our characters don’t exist in the books,” Holt explained. “So I think we had a little bit of creative license to make them completely our own, but with still honoring the world.”
Sten carried a heavy responsibility as lead. “We want to pay tribute and do it justice,” she said. “I feel a tremendous amount of responsibility and pressure to get it right and not disappoint the fans.” Her colleagues agreed. “She killed it!” Holt said. “On and off-camera, she was our fearless leader.”
A Grounded Turn for Rudolph
Adeline Rudolph comes from CAOS (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Resident Evil, and Mortal Kombat II. Neagley is a little more grounded. Rudolph found it refreshing. “It was a lot of fun to play a human,” she said. “Do some normal things, be in an office, pick up a phone.” She described Renee as “a little bit harsh, she can be a bit spicy.”
The series expands the Reacher universe without fully explaining why Neagley loves cereal. That detail remains unexplained. But the new crew brings fresh energy to a franchise that has spent years on screen.
The Verdict on the Handshake
Sten’s handshake is a small moment that carries weight. It marks a turning point for Neagley, who has lost her father and built a new life. It honors the relationship between the two shows. And it lets Neagley be exactly who she is — sassy, brave, and unchanging.
