V for Vendetta is coming back to the big screen, and this time it’s official. Twenty years after its original release, the dystopian thriller starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving is returning to theaters for two nights only on November 1 and November 5, courtesy of Fathom Entertainment, Warner Bros., and DC Vertigo. Tickets are on sale now, and the anniversary screening will include an exclusive new featurette featuring director James McTeigue.
The film, based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd, follows a masked vigilante known only as ‘V’ who fights against a totalitarian British government. He rescues a mild-mannered young woman named Evey Hammond from a life-or-death situation, and together they ignite a revolution against tyranny and oppression.
The Cast Behind the Mask
Portman plays Evey Hammond, a woman rescued from a brutal encounter with authority. Weaving plays V, a masked man with incomparable charisma and ferocious skill in combat and deception. The supporting cast includes Stephen Rea as Eric Finch, Stephen Fry as Gordon Deitrich, John Hurt as Adam Sutler, Rupert Graves as Dominic Stone, Roger Allam as Lewis Prothero, and Tim Pigott-Smith as Peter Creedy.
Why This Movie Still Matters
Some movies grow less relevant over time. V for Vendetta remains eerily prescient. Its themes of fighting authority, battling surveillance, propaganda, fear, and the erosion of individual freedom haven’t vanished. That explains why one of the 2000s’ most distinctive dystopian movies refuses to disappear.
The film’s anonymous hero, sometimes seen as a terrorist, is also viewed by some as a Robin Hood figure. He urges his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression, and as Evey uncovers the truth about V’s mysterious past, she discovers the truth about herself and becomes his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plan to bring freedom and justice back to a cruel and corrupt society.
“Fighting with authority and government, battling surveillance, propaganda, fear, and the erosion of individual freedom — these issues haven’t exactly vanished.”
The Anniversary Event
The two-night theatrical return presents James McTeigue’s dystopian thriller on the big screen, with an exclusive featurette featuring the director included in the screening. Fans get both the film and the new featurette.
A Tale of Masks and Revolution
The film’s central relationship is between V and Evey. He rescues her, and she becomes his ally. Their bond drives the story forward, even as the political stakes rise.
