The Spanish Mediapro Group is set to come back as Imagina on January 1, 2027, after a significant corporate review. The announcement came internally yesterday during a staff-wide meeting held after “several months of reorganization.”.
“The change revives a name the group has used before across its more than 30-year history, reflecting its intent to look ahead while staying grounded in its past,” the company said in a note to press.
Imagina was previously the parent company of Mediapro, following the latter’s 2006 merger with producer Globomedia.
The 2026 Staff Cuts
The news follows a turbulent 2026 for the Spanish sports media and entertainment giant, during which it cut 189 staff. Senior executives left the company, including General Manager Laura Fernández Espeso, The Mediapro Studio’s international content chief Ran Tellem, and business chief Miguel Cardenal.
The founders Jaume Roures and Tatxo Benet left the company, and that prompted a change in leadership. The new management team now includes Executive Chairman Sergio Oslé and CEO Carlos Núñez.
EBITDA Growth Forecast
Oslé and Núñez stated that the firm anticipates its profit before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization will expand from 50% to 60%, compared with 2025, alongside a healthy cash flow output. They attributed this to the comprehensive examination carried out across the entire enterprise during the first part of 2026, which “brought its resources in line with today’s market realities.”.
“The next step is to drive new projects that deliver unique experiences to audiences around the world, funding this growth with more than €100 million [$116 million] the company itself will generate over the next three years,” the company stated.
Sports Rights and Production
Outside of North America, the Middle East and North Africa, and India, the company sells broadcast rights to Spain’s La Liga, while it also produces numerous major sporting events. A separate content production unit sits behind shows like The Head.
The company has its main offices in Madrid and Barcelona.
Southwind’s Ownership Stake
Orient Hontai Capital’s Southwind Media Capital owns Mediapro. The Chinese firm took control of the company in February 2018, securing a majority stake. Former bosses Roures and Benet kept their shares, holding minority positions.
