Lori Loughlin is back as Jennifer Shannon, and she is thrilled about it. The actress returned to the Garage Sale Mysteries franchise for Murder Takes the Stage, which premieres September 19 on Hallmark Channel. After seven years away from the role, Loughlin told TV Insider that stepping back onto the set felt like coming home.
“It was the happiest day of my life,” Loughlin said. “I just was so grateful that the franchise was brought back, so grateful to reunite with the original cast, and I really, really liked the script.”
The Case of the Reenacted Murder
In the new movie, a member of Jennifer’s true-crime book club is killed during the group’s reenactment of the Lizzie Borden case. Jennifer springs into action to solve the crime.
Loughlin described the film as a return to comfort food, but with a twist. “It’s going to feel like comfort food, but I think our script is elevated,” she said. “I love all the movies we’ve done, but I just feel like this is extra special.”
The franchise has been around for over a dozen films, and Loughlin’s return brings the series back to screens after a long absence.
Empty Nesters, but No Divorce
The biggest change in the franchise, according to Loughlin, is that the main characters are now empty nesters. Their children have grown older, and the parents are living through a different chapter of life.
“There are changes in the sense that her children have gotten older,” she explained. “The characters are empty nesters right now, so that’s a different chapter in their lives. But other than that, I think fans will be pleasantly surprised to see that the gang is intact, living their lives, still enjoying each other’s company, very much in each other’s lives, so there’s not a drastic change.”
Loughlin was firm about protecting what made the franchise work. When a producer suggested a major storyline overhaul, including the idea that Jennifer and Jason Shannon might divorce, Loughlin pushed back.
“You cannot do that. That is not what our audience wants to see,” she replied. Her philosophy was simple: “If the formula and the template are not broken, don’t fix it. All we need to do is a good mystery, and that’s what we’ve done.”
The Cast Is Still Together
Loughlin praised the entire cast, singling out Steve Bacic, who plays Jason Shannon. Working with him again was “wonderful,” she said.
“They’re just such accomplished actors, and they bring so much to the material,” she added.
The chemistry remains intact, and the core group feels unchanged despite the passage of time.
More Movies Are on the Table
Loughlin hinted at a bright future for the franchise. There have been over a dozen films in the Garage Sale Mysteries universe, and she is hopeful that more are on the way.
“I think we’re talking about possibly doing more, but until we get that green light, anything can happen,” she told TV Insider.
For now, the focus is on the premiere. Loughlin is also returning for When Calls the Heart Season 14, and she expressed gratitude for the chance to work at Hallmark again.
“They really nurtured this to be as good as it could possibly be, and I’m grateful for that,” she said. “I’m grateful to Hallmark for giving me this opportunity again.”
