Nintendo’s big Zelda birthday party drew a crowd, but not a record-breaking one. The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct peaked at 2.24 million concurrent viewers, a strong number that still fell short of Nintendo’s all-time top 10 showcases.

On September 8, a roughly 30-minute presentation aired to mark four decades of the franchise. It packed in a long look at the Ocarina of Time remake, a limited-edition Switch 2, and fresh details about the live-action Zelda movie. Streaming analytics measured the event across YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms.

Viewership Numbers for the Zelda Direct

Livestreaming platforms recorded more than 1.8 million Hours Watched for the Zelda Direct. Combined Peak Viewers hit 2.24 million. The biggest portion of that audience came from Nintendo’s own YouTube channels, while community streamers also attracted notable crowds.

The most-watched individual creator covering the event was American streamer Miles “Maximilian Dood” Christiansen. His YouTube and Twitch channels combined for more than 34,000 Peak Viewers.

Despite the strong turnout, the Zelda Direct did not break into Nintendo’s all-time top 10 for either Peak Viewers or Hours Watched. Among Nintendo’s 2026 presentations, it ranked second, sitting behind Nintendo Direct June 2026. Across all gaming showcases this year, it placed sixth by Peak Viewers.

Ranking Among 2026 Gaming Showcases

Nintendo’s own record remains untouched. The Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 Showcase remains the company’s most popular presentation by Peak Viewers, with more than 6.3 million concurrent viewers. That number ranks among the highest Peak Viewer totals ever recorded for a livestreamed gaming showcase.

The Zelda Direct’s second-place finish among Nintendo’s 2026 events puts it behind Nintendo Direct June 2026. Its sixth-place standing among all 2026 gaming showcases shows the competitive field, with other publishers drawing large audiences for their own events.

Nintendo’s top presentations of 2026 by Peak Viewers:

  1. Nintendo Direct June 2026 — first place
  2. The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct — 2.24M Peak Viewers

The ranking puts the Zelda event at second place for Nintendo this year.

What the Ocarina of Time Remake Adds

The main feature of the Direct was the Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 2. Eiji Aonuma, who serves as series producer, led viewers through the revised version, highlighting new visuals, a free camera system, manual jumping, and motion-controlled aiming.

The remake gives fully voiced cutscenes to characters beyond Link. Aonuma showed off a feature called Threads of Time, which keeps track of current goals and story progress so players can follow their objectives more easily.

A curious feature lets players hum or play an actual instrument into the Switch’s 2 microphone to produce ocarina tunes. The game is set for launch on November 5, 2026.

Nintendo chose to show off the remake rather than a new mainline Zelda title during the Direct. The company also skipped the Switch versions of The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, both of which had been the subject of long-standing rumors. As a result, the Ocarina of Time remake became the centerpiece of the anniversary event.

Hardware, Amiibo, and Collectibles

Nintendo also showed off a limited-edition Switch 2 themed around The Legend of Zelda. The bundle includes a themed console, a matching dock, a Pro Controller, and a carrying case. It goes on sale on October 29.

Nintendo chose not to include the Ocarina of Time remake with the hardware, so buyers must purchase it on its own instead of getting it as part of a package deal.

The company also announced new Young Link and Zelda amiibo figures for 2027. A Link and Epona LEGO set was confirmed, along with playable ocarinas and an electronic Master Sword.

While the physical hardware announcements offered something tangible for fans to add to their collections, the real highlight was still the software on display. The presentation went beyond mere games, covering a range of other topics as well.

Details on the Live-Action Movie

During the Direct, Nintendo confirmed fresh details about the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda film. Rather than drawing on a single game, the movie will instead build its original story from pieces of the franchise taken from all over.

The movie is set to hit theaters on April 30, 2027. Nintendo held back a complete trailer and no footage was shown during the presentation.

The film’s release date is already set, which removes some uncertainty, but its visual style and emotional feel remain unknown. Viewers will need to hold off on further details until more material becomes available.

Concerts, Museum Plans, and What Was Missing

Beyond games and hardware, the anniversary program includes a tour of orchestral concerts set to start in 2027, along with plans for new additions at the Nintendo Museum and extra features for the Zelda Notes companion app.

The additions expand a celebration covering games, film, music, and physical goods, and unlike a standard Nintendo Direct, the presentation was constructed almost entirely around one series.

Notable omissions marked the Direct as well. A new mainline Zelda game remained unannounced. The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD Switch ports failed to show up. That made the Ocarina of Time remake the flagship release of the anniversary.

Reading the Viewership Numbers

The 2.24 million Peak Viewers number demonstrates genuine enthusiasm for the Zelda franchise. At the same time, it illustrates how that level of engagement falls short when measured against Nintendo’s most significant gatherings.

The Switch 2 Showcase drew nearly three times the audience. The Zelda Direct’s sixth-place finish among 2026 gaming showcases puts it behind several other major events this year.

Nintendo’s Direct still delivered for the company, announcing a major remake, a special-edition console, and movie details all within a single sitting. Viewership may not have broken any records, but the announcements gave fans plenty of reasons to stay engaged.

Release Schedule at a Glance

Item Date
Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 bundle October 29
Ocarina of Time remake release November 5, 2026
Live-action Zelda movie April 30, 2027
Concert tour begins 2027
Young Link and Zelda amiibo 2027

The broadcast went live on September 8, lasting roughly 30 minutes, and touched on games, hardware, a film, concerts, merchandise, and other anniversary activities during that brief stretch.

The broadcast from Nintendo was stuffed with announcements, but it did not deliver every wish fans had for it.

The audience figures paint a similar picture. Solid, though not exceptional by Nintendo’s own standards. The mark of 2.24 million Peak Viewers stands as a solid achievement for an event tied to a single franchise.

Nintendo’s current focus rests on the Ocarina of Time remake. Afterward comes the hardware bundle in October. The film lands next spring. The concert tour and amiibo close out the anniversary year.

The program was complete, though the audience numbers failed to reach new records.
