Jessy Schram has a lot to unpack about Chicago Med Season 12, and she is doing it one tease at a time. The actress, who plays Dr. Hannah Asher, spoke with TV Insider about the season premiere, which airs Wednesday, October 7, at 8/7c on NBC. The episode picks up with Hannah back in the emergency department after maternity leave, and it puts the fate of Gaffney Medical Center’s beloved director, Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), squarely in the spotlight.
Goodwin’s Troubles
Goodwin is facing serious trouble. A few months have passed since board member Miranda Lewis (Orlagh Cassidy) came for her after she allegedly leaked a doctor’s personal psychiatric files. The question hanging over the premiere is simple: can Goodwin save her job?
Schram is not giving away answers, but she is raising questions. “We don’t know what the hospital would do without Goodwin, what that would look like,” she says. “We also don’t know what’s true and not in terms of what was leaked, how it was leaked, all of that kind of stuff.”
She also wonders about motive. “We also think that we know the reason it was leaked, but maybe we don’t,” she says. The uncertainty is central to how the premiere unfolds.
“Was this a betrayal on Goodwin’s part to the hospital or not?”
Schram frames the situation with warmth. She points to Goodwin’s long history with the staff. “I think because Goodwin has fought so hard for everybody in that hospital, I could definitely say that the doctors and nurses are clearly 100 — most of us are clearly 100% behind her,” she says. “So she has support on her side, but it’ll definitely be a journey to see how she handles this and her reasons why.”
Hannah’s Return to Work
Hannah has been off the clock since becoming a mother. Her maternity leave has kept her away from the ED, and the premiere brings her back to decide whether she is ready to return.
“She does get wrangled into helping with a case at the hospital, which ultimately helps her make the decision as to whether or not she’s ready to come back now that she is a mom and has had a change of pace,” Schram previews. The case forces her to confront the pull of her old life.
“And coming back to the first responder life of seeing the best and the worst of humanity, I think changes when you now have a newborn in your life and you’re adjusting to the world around you,” she says.
Hannah and Archer’s Deep Partnership
The premiere also deals with Hannah and Archer’s personal relationship. They are coparents, and the baby has changed the dynamic between them.
“He’s confessed his love,” Schram says. That confession has set the stage for a deeper connection. Schram describes them as being in the same position right now, navigating a new territory together. “We’re dealing with sleepless nights, we’re dealing with learning about, Hannah’s trying to figure out what it looks like while she’s not at work, he’s working the whole time. So they’re definitely in support of each other and they’re in a deep partnership right now.”
The word “deep” is doing a lot of work here. Schram is not saying what the partnership will produce, only that it exists and that it matters. “I think it’ll be interesting to see how deep that partnership goes and what avenue we take,” she says.
What the Premiere Delivers
The premiere promises a full plate. Hannah returns to work, Goodwin faces a serious threat, and Hannah and Archer navigate parenthood together. Schram’s interviews hint at tension, support, and growth across all three threads.
The season premiere is a chance to see how the hospital responds to Goodwin’s crisis. Schram suggests the staff is loyal, but loyalty only goes so far when a director’s career hangs in the balance.
The Premiere’s Schedule

The premiere is a chance to reset the stakes for everyone involved. Hannah’s return to work is a personal test, Goodwin’s future is a hospital-wide test, and Hannah and Archer’s partnership is a private test. Schram’s teasing suggests the season will keep viewers invested in all three.
