StarCraft Devs Insist New Game Is Set to Ship in 2030, and Fans Aren’t Convinced

StarCraft devs promise a new open-world shooter will definitely release in 2030, calling the date a rallying cry and frame that keeps them honest.

Blizzard has announced a new StarCraft game, and it is not the strategy game fans expected. Instead, the company is sending its grim sci-fi property into open-world shooter territory, with a release date set for 2030. That is a long way out.

We got the chance to speak with the developers of the new game, who explained why they shared such a distant release date and even teased some potential gameplay elements for this highly-anticipated title.

The Case for 2030

Hay described the release date as a “rallying cry.” He said it puts a target on the wall that the team can aim at, and it keeps everyone focused on the finish line.

“You walk a funny line, because it’s like, you wanna tease, and we wanna say, ‘Hey, this is where we wanna land,'” Hay explained. “The reality is that it puts a target. It allows us to say to a team that that’s what we’re going for. It’s a rallying cry, and we’re focused on that.”

When asked if 2030 was a solid date, Hay confirmed it was. The date is firm, though he could not say how long the project has been in development.

Building a Living Universe

The team is working to make StarCraft feel like a real place, not just a set of missions. Hay said the goal is to balance welcoming new players with respect for longtime fans.

“It’s a tricky thing,” he said. “It’s a bit of a knife’s edge. You wanna build something that is welcoming and inviting to new players but you wanna make sure it feels real. That when you walk into a bar it feels like a bar from the original world.”

The game will feature the familiar trappings of the franchise — weapons, armor, and the signature creatures of the setting. Hay recalled the first time a Hydralisk appeared on screen, towering over the player and snapping at them.

“There was something really powerful — and I have to be careful not to give too much away here — I remember seeing the first time that a Hydralisk was 10 feet tall, and it was basically snapping at me,” he said. “And I’ve got a gun and I’ve got armor, and I’m feeling like I’m down in the dirt and I’m feeling the weight of it.”

Why Not Real-Time Strategy?

The big surprise is the genre shift. StarCraft has always been a real-time strategy game, and the new game is a shooter. The developers did not explain how the two genres compare directly.

Hay explained the thinking behind the change. The open world format lets players explore, discover, and disrupt in ways that feel natural to the story.

“For us, when we think about the themes and we think about the opportunity for you to be on the battlefield and for you to go out and think about the vista, the opportunity to explore, and then to discover, and then to disrupt. It’s incredibly unique,” he said.

He also hinted at a mechanic that uses enemies against each other. The idea is simple: the enemy of my enemy is a tool to be used.

“We felt like the open world and the opportunity to explore and to discover and of course to disrupt and to use my enemy against another enemy felt really powerful,” he said.

What the Date Means

A 2030 release is a commitment, not a promise. The date is firm, but the game is still early in development. Hay could not say how long the project has been running, but he joked that it has been in his head for about 25 years.

The team has been finding people who love the brand, he said, and taking great care to make something that feels authentic. The challenge is making a world that welcomes newcomers while respecting the history of the franchise.

The Road Ahead

The game is still a ways out. Blizzard has shown a teaser trailer, and the developers are holding back some details to keep the mystery intact.

Key Facts

  • Game: StarCraft (new entry in the franchise)
  • Genre: Open-world shooter, not RTS
  • Release date: 2030
  • Developer: Blizzard
  • Announced at: Blizzcon 2026
  • GM & VP: Dan Hay
  • Associate Director: AnaLee Haertling

The developers are betting that a fixed date will keep them honest. Whether that bet pays off is a question for 2030.

The paper’s honest reaction to this story is amusement. The developers’ earnest explanation for a 2030 release date — that it is a “rallying cry” and a “frame that keeps us honest” — is so sincere it lands as comedy rather than marketing boilerplate.
