Netflix’s six-part adaptation of Miles Franklin’s My Brilliant Career arrives with a lead performance built to carry it. Philippa Northeast plays Sybylla Melvyn, a 17-year-old in rural Australia who wants to write her own story in an era that expects her to find a man and settle down.

Sybylla Melvyn Wants a Pen, Not a Husband
That is the engine of the series, and it runs clean. Sybylla is restless and sharp, and the show never treats her ambition as a phase she will grow out of. The setting is rural Australia in the early 20th century, and the show uses it as a wall rather than a backdrop.
Harry Beecham Complicates the Plan
Christopher Chung plays Harry Beecham, Sybylla’s love interest, and the romance is the disruption, not the destination. The series follows her plans as a budding writer and then puts a young man named Harry in the road. The tension is honest: the show knows the audience wants both and refuses to pretend that is simple.
What Liz Doran Changed From the Novel
Liz Doran is showrunner and co-writer, with Alyssa McClelland and Anne Renton directing. The series is based on Franklin’s novel but adds plotlines and characters, which matters when a book this well known gets a six-episode run.

The Cast Around Northeast
Genevieve O’Reilly plays Helen Bell and Anna Chancellor plays Mrs. Bossier, with Kate Mulvany as Augusta Beecham, Jake Dunn as Frank Hawden, Sherry-Lee Watson as Nell Kirby, Miah Madden as Betty Kirby and Ella Oliphant as Gertie Melvyn. Alexander England was also named in the June 2025 announcement, though the source does not list a role for him. The lineup was announced in June 2025.
Two Soundtracks, One Release Day
All six episodes premiered on 13 August 2026, and two soundtrack albums landed the same day. That is a lot of music for a single season, and it signals how much the show leans on tone to sell a period it could easily have made stiff.
Our Verdict on My Brilliant Career
The additions to Franklin’s novel are the risk here, and they mostly pay off. What holds the series together is Northeast, who has to make stubbornness likable for six episodes and does.
The weaker stretch is the romance. Harry is written as a genuine option rather than a foil, which softens the argument the show is making about Sybylla’s choices. A sharper series would let her be harder to like.
Still, this is a confident adaptation with a clear point of view about its heroine, and the period detail serves the conflict instead of decorating it.
