The Coalition is celebrating being one of Xbox’s main titles, but the party has a dark cloud over it. Gears of War: E-Day’s developers told gaming news creator Destin Lergarie that they feel honored to bring the franchise’s legacy forward, even as the studio braces for more layoffs.
In an interview with Lergarie, studio art director Aryan Hanbeck and creative director Matt Searcy spoke about the game’s place in the Xbox portfolio. Searcy said the team feels “pretty honored” to be the ones bringing Gears forward, and he noted that the franchise is “part of Xbox’s DNA.”
Exclusive Status
Gears of War: E-Day is a console exclusive, but that wasn’t always set in stone. The franchise debuted on PlayStation consoles when the original remaster, Gears of War: Reloaded, released in August 2025.
Many fans saw that launch as a sign that the series had left its exclusive past behind. The idea that exclusive titles might be a thing of the past seemed settled. But the exclusivity question remained messy for months, with leaked listings and rumors circulating before the official announcement.
The Xbox Games Showcase Announcement
Then came the Xbox Games Showcase 2026. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced that the Emergence Day prequel story would only come to Xbox Series X/S and PC. She promised that Xbox would never release exclusive titles on rival platforms.
The decision was a shock. It arrived as Microsoft kicked off a broader push for more exclusive games. That push included Gears of War: E-Day, which became the flagship example of the company’s commitment to exclusivity.
Layoffs at The Coalition
The celebration has a sharp edge. The game’s story director was laid off just one week before the game reached players’ hands.
More developers at The Coalition are now bracing for additional layoffs. The report does not specify who those developers are or how many jobs are at risk. The uncertainty hangs over the studio as it prepares for the game’s full launch.
Searcy on Making the Game
Searcy pushed back against the idea that the team was chasing exclusivity for its own sake. He framed the decision as a natural extension of the studio’s priorities.
“I think this is true of most game devs: You’re just passionate about your craft,” he said. “We’re all gamers first and foremost. We love making games. We love making Gears. So, from our perspective, we just wanted to make the best goddamn Gears game we could. We wanted it to be a technical and art showpiece.”
He added that seeing Sharma say “To return to Xbox, we’re returning to Gears” on stage was a “really cool moment.” He also noted that the team has been “one of Xbox’s main titles” for a long time, and that it felt cool to fill that role again.
The Platforms in Question
Leaked listings and rumors circulated for a while before the official announcement. The Coalition denied any last-minute cancellations, saying the platform choice was not a hurried decision.
The game launched in early access for Premium Edition players on PC and Xbox Series X/S on October 1, 2026. Its full launch follows this week, on October 6.
The Early Review
IGN published an early review of Gears of War: E-Day, covering only the campaign mode. The review returned a 9/10.
