Clemson Falls Behind as Miami’s Portal-Driven Rise Overtakes the ACC

Mario Cristobal's Miami Hurricanes routed Dabo Swinney's Clemson Tigers 41-13, showing how NIL and transfers have overtaken old-school recruiting.

Miami Hurricanes players celebrate on the field during a college football game under bright stadium lights.

Saturday night saw Miami defeat Clemson by a score of 13-41, and the gap between the teams was anything but slight. The contest served as a test of two entirely distinct approaches to managing a college football operation, with one head coach appearing anchored in outdated habits and the other clearly advancing toward something new.

The Tigers under Dabo Swinney used to be the undisputed champions of the ACC. They claimed eight conference titles in a run spanning 10 years from 2015-24, along with two national championships. Yet the sport moves quickly, particularly since the transfer portal and player-name, image and likeness (NIL) era changed how teams operate. Miami has now ascended to the top of the league under Mario Cristobal, taking over where Clemson once ruled.

Though the Hurricanes have not reached an ACC Championship Game, let alone won eight in a decade, their appearance in last year’s national title game has established them as one of college football’s elite teams.

Cristobal’s New Way

For years, Cristobal built his reputation as one of the nation’s top recruiters during his time as an assistant and later as the head coach at Oregon. Now, his power to secure commitments from players has been given a major boost thanks to NIL, the transfer portal, and a donor base with deep pockets in Miami.

Since Cristobal took over in December 2021, Miami has been aggressive in both recruiting and the transfer portal. In his five years at the helm, the Hurricanes have landed a top-10 recruiting class in three of them, ranking 15th in 2022 and 2025. Meanwhile, they have placed in the top-10 transfer portal class for each of the last four years, coming in at 12th in 2022, according to 247Sports.

What the quarterback position reveals is a steady stream of talent heading to Miami. The Hurricanes have invested heavily to secure a top transfer quarterback in each of the last three seasons, starting with Cam Ward, then Carson Beck, and now Darian Mensah. Ward was selected in the first round as the No. 1 overall pick. Beck guided the Hurricanes to a national championship game. Mensah is currently one of the Heisman frontrunners midway through the 2026 season.

Swinney’s Old Way

Every season at Clemson was marked by deep rosters. Swinney established himself as one of the nation’s premier recruiters, and he brought in top-10 classes year after year, which gave his teams an abundance of talent on the sideline that overwhelmed their opponents.

His work at the high school level has gradually declined. The last top-10 recruiting class he put together was in 2021, the year before Cristobal arrived in Miami. Since then, the Tigers have slipped below the top 20 in each of the last two seasons.

There is no other solution than for the portal to make up for the shortfall. Yet Swinney was long a holdout against the transfer portal, rejecting its use entirely at first and remaining hesitant to fully embrace it. That reluctance now stands as Clemson’s greatest weakness.

Clemson has yet to assemble a top-50 transfer portal class, and it is falling short of the nation’s elite in college football because of it. The gap was on display Saturday night, when the Hurricanes dominated the Tigers with the kind of size and speed that once filled the depth chart at Clemson.

What This Means

There is no path back to college football’s mountaintop for Clemson without embracing what is required in today’s game. The Tigers only needed to look across the sideline Saturday night to see what that looks like in the form of a Miami team that has surpassed them and is now the ACC power that sets its sights on the Playoff each season.

Cristobal has assembled a roster packed with gifted players through a mix of top-level recruiting and transfer portal additions. Swinney’s unwillingness to make hard, practical business choices might win him points with the Clemson faithful, but it is also what keeps the Tigers from being serious championship contenders.

The clash between Cristobal’s aggressive portal-and-NIL strategy and Swinney’s old-school resistance is amusing and distinct, with the figures revealing precisely where the divergence occurs.

Key Numbers

Class Type Miami Clemson
Top-10 recruiting 3 of 5 years Last top-10: 2021
Top-10 transfer portal Each of last 4 years Never top-50
2022 class 15th Outside top 20

Order of Transfer Quarterbacks

  1. Cam Ward — No. 1 overall pick
  2. Carson Beck — Led Hurricanes to national title game
  3. Darian Mensah — Heisman frontrunner midway through 2026 season

The game was a declaration. Clemson is sliding down, and the distance is plain for anyone who watched.
