Red Dead Redemption 2 fans have waited years to set foot in Mexico, and a fan-built mod has finally made that crossing possible. The Nuevo Paraíso – The Forgotten Frontier mod, created by modder Rixus724, brings the controversial border state back to the game, redesigned for 1907 rather than recreated from scratch.
The mod is free to download on PC via Nexus Mods. It restores three regions — Diez Coronas, Perdido, and Punta Orgullo — along with restored towns and settlements that feature their own daily routines, services, and functions. Rixus724 built the project from the ground up, adding a new railroad system, new Mexican wildlife, and a host of activities that keep players busy.
Crossing The Border
In the original Red Dead Redemption, John Marston could freely explore Mexico. In Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur Morgan could only glimpse it across the water. Now Arthur can finally head over the border, and the mod gives him a whole region to explore.
The design choice is smart. Rather than recreating the Red Dead version of Nuevo Paraíso, Rixus724 redesigned it for 1907. That means the state does not simply look like a copy of the older game — instead, it has been rebuilt with a new railroad system, new Mexican wildlife, and updated settlement details. The official description promises “Explore the three regions of Nuevo Paraíso, now powered by the RDR2 Engine. From towns brought back from RDR1 to an expanded landscape featuring new wildlife and vegetation that breathe life and detail into the controversial state of Nuevo Paraíso.”
The region is not peaceful. Foundations lined by conflict, government oppression, military control, and poverty mean unrest is growing, and the mod sets the region on a path toward civil war.
What You Get In The Frontier
Nuevo Paraíso – The Forgotten Frontier adds a wide variety of activities. Treasure hunting, bounty hunting, and fort defender missions give players reasons to wander the map. Bartenders, smuggler jobs, safe houses, taxi jobs, and stables round out the mix.
The mod also restores nearby towns and settlements, each with its own mini-population. These settlements feature daily routines, activities, services, and functions, bringing the region to life beyond its borders.
| Activity | Type |
|---|---|
| Treasure hunting | Exploration |
| Bounty hunting | Combat |
| Fort defender | Defense |
| Bartenders | Social |
| Smuggler jobs | Stealth |
| Safe houses | Home base |
| Taxi jobs | Transport |
| Stables | Animal care |
A Mod Worth Downloading
The mod is free, which means there is no financial barrier to entry. For players who have been waiting on official DLC, this is a welcome stopgap.
Rixus724 spent a long time in development on the project. The result is a brand-new single-player expansion that offers a nod to the history of the franchise.
The activities alone justify the download. Treasure hunting and bounty hunting offer hours of exciting content. Smuggler jobs and taxi jobs add variety to the day-to-day grind. The mod gives Arthur a reason to leave the familiar paths of the American West and step into a new frontier.
The Design Choice
The mod respects the source material while building something new on top of it. Rather than recreate the Red Dead version of Nuevo Paraíso, Rixus724 redesigned it for 1907. That approach means the region looks distinct from the earlier game, with new wildlife, vegetation, and settlement details that breathe life into the controversial state.
The result is a region that feels like a proper expansion, not just a collection of assets dropped into the game.
For anyone who has been waiting on official DLC, this is a welcome stopgap. It is free, it is finished, and it delivers on the promise of a forgotten frontier.
