Madden NFL 21 landed on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Google Stadia on August 28, 2020, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions following on December 4. It is the 31st installment of the long-running Madden NFL series, and it is a game at war with itself: a handful of genuinely good ideas buried under technical trouble and a stubborn refusal to move.
EA Tiburon promised “new innovative gameplay mechanics” that would “offer advanced levels of control and inspire creativity on both sides of the ball.” Some of that arrived.

Stick Skills and The Yard
The new stick skill ball-carrier system is the best thing here. EA added it alongside new pass rush moves, changes to tackling and user-controlled celebrations.
The Yard is the other bright spot. The backyard-style mode strips the sport down to something looser, and it is where Madden NFL 21 feels least like a spreadsheet. It also gets weird in the best way.
- Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time NBA MVP, is playable in The Yard
- His brothers Thanasis and Kostas, also NBA players, join him
- The three appear in an EA promotional video wearing uniforms inspired by their homeland of Greece
- A SpongeBob SquarePants expansion arrived in January 2021, adding a Bikini Bottom-themed “reef-top” stadium, themed modes and cosmetic items
That last item was a cross-promotion for Nickelodeon’s simulcast of a January 10 wild card playoff game. It is silly. It is also the most personality the franchise has shown in years.
Lamar Jackson and a Delayed Debut
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson is the cover athlete, and Brandon Gaudin and Charles Davis call the games. Jackson’s presence was the right call — he was the most exciting player in football when the game released, and the cover reflects that.
The game’s first-look video was set to premiere on June 1 but slipped to June 16 because of the George Floyd protests. On September 8, EA announced Colin Kaepernick would be available to play and sign as a free agent — his first appearance in the franchise since Madden NFL 17.
That move drew a mixed response, due in part to Kaepernick being rated an 81 overall. That put him above comparable quarterbacks like Ryan Tannehill (80) and Kyler Murray (77). Whatever you make of the rating, EA walked into the argument on its own.
Where It Breaks Down
The technical issues are not minor. They are the difference between a game you play for a season and one you put down in a week. Player reception was negative, and the loudest complaint was the lack of innovation — a charge that is hard to dismiss when the headline features are a running mechanic and a SpongeBob stadium.
The online servers for Madden NFL 21 shut down on June 30, 2025. That is the real verdict on a sports game. When the servers go, the modes that depend on them go with them.
Critical reception was mixed. Reviewers praised the gameplay and criticized the technical problems. That split is honest, and it is also the whole story of this release.
What the Shutdown Settles
Madden NFL 21 is not a bad football game. The stick skill system is a real improvement, and The Yard proves the series can still surprise. But a yearly sports title is judged against the year before it, and this one does not clear that bar.
The Kaepernick addition was a genuine moment. The rating debate that followed was noise. The technical problems were criticized, and player reception was negative.
What matters most is the server shutdown. A game that cannot be played online is a game with an expiration date, and Madden NFL 21 hit its date. That is the part worth remembering — not the SpongeBob stadium, not the cover, but the fact that EA sold a football game built around online modes and then turned the servers off.
