Overwatch season 5 starts Tuesday, and Blizzard is bringing a new Support hero named Doctrine, a new Escort map called Grímsvötn, and a stack of new skins, including the game’s first Mythic Weapon skin for Lúcio. The season also features a Halloween battle pass, a Tech Witches line, and a Solo Leveling anime collaboration. Here is everything fans need to know about the cosmetics and beyond.
Battle Pass Skins
The season 5 battle pass runs on Halloween themes, with five Legendary skins and three Epics joining the usual tiers. The Legendaries include Ghostly Belle Ashe, Jack O’ Ripper Soldier: 76, Ghost Bride Mei, Bat Empress Junker Queen, and Autumn Fox Zenyatta. The Epics are Skelly Bastion, Witching Hour Brigitte, and Spectral Shroud Symmetra.
The Ultimate version of the battle pass adds Crimson Regent Doctrine and Ghost Voyager Venture Legendary skins. That means players who spend the extra currency get access to all seven Legendary skins across both passes.
Shop Skins
Overwatch players with coins to spend can pick up new Tech Witches skins for D.Mon, Shion, Juno, Sierra, and Jetpack Cat. The high-tech hexy designs will be available in the shop Oct. 9–26. There are also Legendary skins for Mizuki, Domina, Cassidy, Ashe (and BOB), Moira, and Ana, plus Dokiwatch returns with skins for Mercy, Ilari, Lifeweaver, Ramattra, and Anran.
The shop lineup gives players plenty of reasons to dip into their coin piles, though the seasonal pricing window means some options will disappear after Oct. 26.
Lúcio’s Breakdancing Frog
Lúcio finally gets his first Mythic Weapon skin, the Treblemaker. The highlight is a little blue breakdancing frog and a disco ball housed inside the weapon. The skin comes in four tiers, each adding new effects as players earn it:
- Level 1: The base Mythic look with audio effects for healing and firing.
- Level 2: Custom kill effects rotate through graffiti-style frog poses.
- Level 3: A custom reactive UI grows more elaborate with final blows.
- Level 4: Full music-inspired flourish and reload experience, starring the dancing frog.
The tiered design means players who want the full effect will need to keep playing. Level 4 is the finisher, and it brings the dance floor fully into play.
Wuyang’s Dragon Shaoxia
Support hero Wuyang gets a new Mythic skin in season 5, Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang. The unlock progression mirrors Lúcio’s, with four levels of customization:
- Level 1: The base Mythic form, accompanied by a dragon familiar.
- Level 2: New customizations, including flowing hairstyles, ethereal dragon horns, and a mask.
- Level 3: Additional palettes that transform both Wuyang and the dragon familiar.
- Level 4: Transformative VFX that bring the full power of Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang to life.
The dragon familiar follows Wuyang into battle throughout the unlock process, making the skin a visual presence from the first level.
Solo Leveling Collaboration
Five new collaboration skins are coming from Solo Leveling’s Shadow Monarch series. They arrive Oct. 6–26 and include:
- Genji × Sung Jinwoo
- Reaper × Igris
- Anran × Cha Hae-In
- Reinhardt × Iron
- Lifeweaver × Choi Jong-In
The collaboration brings characters from the webtoon and anime series into Overwatch’s roster of skins. Each pair blends the two characters’ styles into a single design.
New Escort Map
Grímsvötn is the first new Escort map in nearly four years. It was once an Overwatch Watchpoint, later controlled by Helix, and has housed some of the world’s most dangerous criminals, including Doomfist himself. Now Talon has taken control of the prison, and players will push through the scene of the crime while the escape begins to unfold around them.
The map description promises fire, ice, stolen technology, and forgotten prisoners. It also encourages players to take a second to look around between fights, a charming touch that respects players’ time without treating them like children.
What To Watch For
The season’s biggest draw is Lúcio’s Mythic Weapon skin. The breakdancing frog and disco ball housed inside the weapon are a small detail with a big personality, and the tiered progression gives players a reason to keep playing. Wuyang’s Dragon Shaoxia offers a similar path of unlocks, though its focus on elemental transformation and familiar companions sets it apart.
The battle pass and shop skins cover the Halloween and Tech Witches themes, with the Ultimate pass offering a premium bundle of Legendary options. The Solo Leveling skins add a pop culture draw for fans of the webtoon and anime.
Blizzard’s new trailer shows off Doctrine, Grímsvötn, the new cosmetics, and the Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games limited-time mode. It also lets players see the breakdancing frog in action, which is a selling point in itself.
The Verdict
The little blue breakdancing frog housed inside Lúcio’s weapon is the kind of detail that makes Overwatch fans smile. It is a small touch, but it lands. The map’s promise to ‘maybe take a second to look around’ between fights is charming without being patronizing, and the tiered Mythic skins give players a clear path to earning the full effect.
Season 5 is a full package. The new hero, map, and skins all arrive at once, and the Halloween battle pass gives players a structured way to earn them. The Solo Leveling collaboration adds a cultural hook for fans outside the core player base.
The only real question is whether the tiered Mythic skins will hold attention over the long haul. Four levels is a lot of grinding for a single cosmetic, and players who want the full effect will need to commit.
For now, the frog is the star.
