A glamorous woman in a red dress stands on a dimly lit street, holding a microphone, with neon lights glowing in the background.

Jessica Chastain plays a country singer hunting her missing niece in a Nashville mystery, and Netflix just dropped the first trailer for Heartland. The film lands on the streamer next month, with the movie and its soundtrack both arriving on November 13.

Chastain stars as Misty Jones, a former Nashville superstar who has been away from the spotlight for twenty years. She returns to Music City to track down her niece, a rising country star who has vanished into the city’s seedier side. The trailer suggests Misty’s past is not done with her, and that powerful people want her niece to stay lost.

Chastain Sings Her Way Through the Trailer

Chastain is not just starring in Heartland — she is also performing on its soundtrack. The title track, “Heartland,” features Chastain singing alongside Jennifer Nettles, who also stars in the film.

Ross Lynch (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Carter Faith, a CMA Award-nominee making her acting debut, appear on the soundtrack. So do musicians Margo Price, Carly Pearce, Eddy Dunlap, Channing Wilson and Dave “Fergie” Ferguson.

The trailer positions Misty as the “Queen of Mean,” a nickname the film uses to describe her. She learns that no matter how much she thinks she has cleaned Nashville dust off her boots, her past is still within reach. And some very powerful people want to make sure her niece is never found.

A Long History With Monster Movies

Rob London has spent decades watching film and television with the appetite of a starving raccoon. He grew up watching monster movies on television, browsing the faded offerings at the local video rental shop, and studying the Video Movie Guide until his fingers were stained with ink.

His areas of interest include:

  • Science fiction
  • Film noir
  • Horror flicks
  • ’70s disaster pictures
  • Bond movies
  • ’90s action
  • Giant robots
  • Dinosaurs
  • Superheroes
  • The output of Cannon Films

As a Canadian, he also has a soft spot for the cheesier home-grown fare known as Canuxploitation. He has written for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe and is a member of the Marvel Research Team, and he can often be found talking about comic-book continuity or complaining about the Toronto Maple Leafs on his Twitter account.

Heartland arrives on Netflix next month, with the soundtrack and the film both landing on November 13. Chastain sings, Nettles duets, and the rest of the cast joins the record. Whether the mystery holds together is a question the trailer cannot answer.
