Luke Grimes Says a ‘Marshals’ & ‘Dutton Ranch’ Crossover Is ‘Necessary’ — But Not This Season

Luke Grimes says a 'Marshals' & 'Dutton Ranch' crossover is 'necessary,' but it won't happen this season.

Luke Grimes and Kelly Reilly, the stars of Yellowstone spinoffs Marshals and Dutton Ranch, have made their position clear: a crossover between their shows is not optional. It is necessary.

Grimes spoke to TV Insider about the possibility of bringing the two series together, and his reasoning is simple. His character Kayce Dutton lost his wife Monica in the original series, and his sister Beth is one of the few people left standing in his world. Reilly plays Beth, and she has been pushing for the same connection since the first season of Dutton Ranch.

Grimes on Why the Crossover Makes Sense

Grimes told TV Insider that a crossover is not out of the question, but it will not happen this season. He framed the potential meeting as something that would make sense for the story, not as a stunt.

“It’s not out of the question that we might have some sort of crossover at some point,” Grimes said. “Beth’s basically Kayce’s only living family member other than Tate. It would make sense that down the line we’d at least talk.”

He also confirmed that he and Reilly have been talking about it behind the scenes. The planning has been quiet, but persistent.

“[Kelly and I have] texted about it back and forth a lot,” Grimes added, “talked about how it’d be fun and necessary for our story arcs, however they’re going to end.”

Reilly Pushed for the Crossover After the Finale

Reilly has been making the case for a crossover since the first season of Dutton Ranch. After the season finale, she told TV Insider that she wanted Beth to reconnect with her brother Kayce.

“I think Beth misses her brother, so I would love that to happen,” Reilly said. “And we were all very close. Wes Bentley, who played Jamie, Kelsey. We were a family, and we miss them very much. So the more we can get back in, that’s what we’re fighting for, Cole and I. Where we get our wishes, we would love to have as many back in our world.”

She also noted that Monica’s death could not be worked into the plot of Dutton Ranch because of how the two shows were written and filmed. The timing meant that the character’s death had to be treated as a separate event in each universe.

“I think it’s something that was a missed opportunity, quite honestly,” Reilly said of Monica’s absence from her show. “But we’re all both trying to start up these big shows. And I think we can see where there are gaps and we see where things needed to be fixed. And that’s what you get the opportunity to do in a Season 2.”

What the Shows Are Actually About Right Now

While Grimes and Reilly are planning for the future, their current seasons are focused on very different problems.

In Marshals Season 2, which premieres October 4 on CBS, the top priority is rescuing Tate (Brecken Merrill). Kayce and Tate are living on what’s left of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, East Camp, but a rich rancher named Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) is trying to take it for himself. He kidnapped Tate in the Season 1 finale to do it.

The show follows Kayce and his son as they try to build a new life in Montana after the tragic premature death of Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille).

Dutton Ranch Faces Its Own Missing Son

Marshals deals with a missing father figure. Dutton Ranch deals with a missing child.

Beth and Rip (Cole Hauser) are currently dealing with their own kidnapped son, Carter (Finn Little), in Dutton Ranch, which is set in Texas. Season 2 is currently in the works.

Both shows share a family history, but the gap between them is real.

How the Two Shows Handle Monica’s Death

Monica’s death is a central event in the Yellowstone universe, but it has been treated inconsistently across the spinoffs. Marshals handles it as the tragedy that drives Kayce and Tate’s story. Dutton Ranch treats it as a backstory detail that the show simply could not incorporate.

Reilly has acknowledged the gap publicly. She framed it as a missed opportunity rather than a failure, and she pointed to the chance to fix it in Season 2.

The Timeline of the Crossover Talk

The crossover conversation has been ongoing for a while. Here is what we know:

  1. Reilly first pushed for a crossover after the Dutton Ranch Season 1 finale.
  2. Grimes and Reilly have been texting about it back and forth.
  3. Grimes confirmed to TV Insider that a crossover is “necessary” for their story arcs.
  4. Grimes said there will be no crossover in Marshals Season 2.
  5. Reilly noted that Monica’s death was a missed opportunity for Dutton Ranch.

What Happens Next

Marshals Season 2 premieres October 4 on CBS. The season will focus on rescuing Tate, not on a crossover with Dutton Ranch.

Dutton Ranch Season 2 is currently in the works, and Reilly has said she wants to bring more of the Yellowstone family back into her world. Whether that includes a crossover depends on scheduling and creative decisions.

The Paper’s View

Grimes is right that a crossover would make sense for Kayce and Beth’s storylines. Reilly is right that Monica’s death was a missed opportunity. The gap between the two shows is real, and it has been acknowledged by the actors themselves.

Whether the networks can find a way to bridge it remains to be seen.

For now, fans will have to wait for Season 2 of Dutton Ranch to see if the wish becomes reality.
