Onimusha: Way of the Sword has already sold over 1 million copies, Capcom said today. The game hit that mark within its opening day alone.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword came out on computers, Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo Switch 2 and other home consoles on 4th September. Capcom has not broken sales down by platform. The wider Onimusha series has now sold more than 10 million copies since it began.
A Strong Showing on Computers
Capcom has not said which platform sold the most copies. Still, computers look like a strong contender. The game reached 85,081 players playing at once on Steam, according to SteamDB.
It now sits among the most bought games on that platform.
Way of the Sword marks the first new Onimusha game in over 20 years. It fits a trend for Capcom, which has had success bringing older franchises up to date for today’s players. The studio has done this before with other classic series, and Onimusha appears to be the newest example of that approach.
This is not Capcom’s only big game to come out this year. Pragmata, a new franchise that spent years in development, sold one million copies in its first two days on sale. That’s a strong result for a game without an established name behind it.
Resident Evil Requiem did even better. It sold five million copies in under a week, a sign of just how much demand Capcom’s games are drawing right now.
A Date Moved Earlier
In July, Capcom moved Way of the Sword’s date earlier. That came just days after the company said it remained committed to the game’s original date of 25th September. The sudden change caught some players off guard, though it clearly did not hurt sales.
In Eurogamer’s review of the game, Dom Peppiatt praised what Capcom made with Way of the Sword. He pointed to its deep sword battles and its decision to avoid many of the design habits common to Soulslike games. That decision, he suggested, gives the game its own identity rather than following others.
The result looks like a strong start for a series that had gone quiet for more than 20 years. Whether Way of the Sword can keep up this pace remains to be seen. Its opening numbers, though, give Capcom a clear win, and another sign that its older franchises still have an audience worth reaching. For a series once thought finished, that is no small thing.
