Rob Lowe Rebuilds a Firehouse in Austin

Rob Lowe plays Owen Strand, a former New York City firefighter. Per the show’s premise, Owen was the lone survivor of his Manhattan firehouse on 9/11, and he rebuilt that station as a captain in the New York City Fire Department. Then a similar tragedy hits Austin’s Station 126, where all but one member were killed in a freak accident, and Owen goes to Texas to rebuild again.

He brings his son T.K. with him. Lowe was cast in the lead role on May 12, 2019.

The premise is the show’s engine. Owen is a captain who has already been through the fire, and the series follows whether a man can keep rebuilding after the thing that broke him.

Lowe plays Owen as big-city swagger on the surface, with a secret underneath that could end his life, according to the show’s synopsis. The series returns to that secret often.

T.K. and Carlos on Station 126

Ronen Rubinstein plays Tyler Kennedy “T.K.” Strand, Owen’s son, described in the show’s synopsis as troubled. Rafael L. Silva plays Carlos Reyes. Rubinstein and Silva were both announced as cast members in September 2019.

T.K. is a firefighter. The source does not describe Carlos’ job or the arc of their relationship, and this paper will not fill that in.

The 9-1-1 format is built on emergencies, and Lone Star delivers them across its run.

Gina Torres and the Station 126 Ensemble

Gina Torres joined as a series regular for season two, playing Tommy Vega. She was cast on September 3, 2020.

Jim Parrack plays Judd Ryder. He joined the cast on September 18, 2019. The source does not say which Station 126 member survived the accident that brings Owen to Austin.

Natacha Karam plays Marjan Marwani, Brian Michael Smith plays Paul Strickland, Julian Works plays Mateo Chavez, and Brianna Baker plays Nancy Gillian. Brianna Baker was promoted to series regular for the third season on May 25, 2021. Skyler Yates and Kelsey Yates play Evie and Isabella Vega. Jackson Pace plays Wyatt Harris.

That is a large ensemble. Neal McDonough, D.B. Woodside and Amanda Schull joined in recurring roles for the fourth season on September 28, 2022.

Liv Tyler and Sierra McClain Left the Cast

The cast did not stay fixed. Liv Tyler was announced on September 11, 2019, to star opposite Lowe, then departed before season two. She had been commuting between London and Los Angeles, and asked producers to let her out of her multi-year contract because of pandemic travel difficulties and not wanting to be away from her young children. The possibility of her return was left open.

Sierra McClain, an original cast member, did not return as Grace Ryder for the fifth season. That was reported in June 2024 as a cast renegotiation dispute.

Those are real losses to a cast list. The source does not describe how the show handled them on screen.

Five Seasons and a Planned Final Season

In May 2023, Fox renewed the series for a fifth and final season. It premiered on September 23, 2024, and concluded on February 3, 2025.

That is what the source gives: a renewal, a premiere date, a finale date. It does not say how long the final season ran or whether the ending was planned around.

The Cast, in Order of Announcement

  1. Rob Lowe as Owen Strand — announced May 12, 2019.
  2. Liv Tyler, starring opposite Lowe — announced September 11, 2019; departed before season two.
  3. Jim Parrack as Judd Ryder — announced September 18, 2019.
  4. Ronen Rubinstein as T.K. Strand and Sierra McClain as Grace Ryder — announced September 20, 2019.
  5. Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Rafael L. Silva and Julian Works — announced September 23, 2019.
  6. Gina Torres as Tommy Vega — announced September 3, 2020, for season two.

The franchise logic is simple. The original 9-1-1 proved the format works. Lone Star ran five seasons and 72 episodes on Fox, a respectable run for a spin-off. What the source does not give is any measure of whether it matched the original in quality or audience, and this paper will not invent one.

What the source does establish is a show that changed shape as it went. Tyler left before season two. McClain left before season five. Torres arrived in season two and stayed. That is a cast list rebuilt almost as often as Station 126 was, and the show kept going through it.

The 6.7 out of 10 is the only published critical score in the record here. It is a middling number for a show that ran five seasons, and it is the fairest single measure available.

Five seasons, 72 episodes, and a final season that Fox ordered in advance. That is a complete run on paper. Whether it landed is not something the source settles.
