“Rent-a-Girlfriend” opens on a kiss and a month. Kazuya Kinoshita, 20, gets dumped by Mami Nanami after four weeks of dating, and the show does not let him grieve with dignity. He rents a girlfriend through a mobile app, meets Chizuru Mizuhara, and calls out her act to her face. Then his grandmother lands in the hospital, takes one look at Chizuru, and the fake relationship becomes a trap neither of them can walk out of.

Kazuya Kinoshita and the App That Starts Everything
The premise sounds like a joke, and for a while it is one. Kazuya is a failure of a college student, spiteful after the breakup, and the rental service is his petty answer to being alone. Shun Horie voices him as a mess of bad decisions and worse timing.
What lifts the show above its own setup is Chizuru. Sora Amamiya plays her as a professional who is good at her job and resents being seen through. When Kazuya calls out her “authentic” act, he is not wrong, and the series knows it. That first fight is the real pilot.
Then the twist lands. Chizuru lives next door. She goes to his university. The rental was supposed to be a transaction, and now it is a secret they have to keep from his grandmother, from his friends, and from each other.
Mami Nanami, Ruka Sarashina, and the Women Around the Lie
The supporting cast does more than fill out a harem. Aoi Yuuki voices Mami, the ex who dumped Kazuya and keeps circling back, and she is the show’s quiet threat. Nao Toyama’s Ruka Sarashina pushes in with her own claim on him. Rie Takahashi plays Sumi Sakurasawa, the shy one, and Yu Serizawa rounds out the group as Mini Yaemori.
Yukari Nozawa’s Nagomi Kinoshita is the engine of the whole deception. She is smitten with Chizuru, and her hospitalization is what forces the two leads to keep performing. Without the grandmother, “Rent-a-Girlfriend” is a short story. With her, it is a series.
A Rom-Com That Ran for 60 Episodes
The run here is unusual. “Rent-a-Girlfriend” ran one season across 60 episodes, first airing July 11, 2020, and last airing June 27, 2026. That is a long life for a single season, and it says something about how the show was scheduled and sustained.

Where the Show Gets It Right and Where It Drags
The best thing “Rent-a-Girlfriend” does is refuse to let Kazuya off the hook. He is not a misunderstood nice guy. He is a guy who rented a person and then caught feelings, and the series makes him live with that.
Chizuru is the stronger character, and the show knows it. Her job is to be wanted by strangers, and the emotional core is her deciding what she actually wants when the meter is not running. Amamiya carries that.
The weakness is pacing. Sixty episodes is a lot of room, and the middle stretches lean hard on the same misunderstanding. Mami’s return, Ruka’s push, the grandmother’s health — the show cycles through these beats more than it needs to.
Still, the premise holds. A rental girlfriend is a strange thing to build a romance on, and “Rent-a-Girlfriend” earns the strangeness instead of apologizing for it.
Why the Fake Relationship Works
This is a comedy that takes its own premise seriously, and that is why it lands. The fake relationship with Chizuru is not a gimmick to be discarded. It is the whole point, and the show keeps finding new pressure to put on it.
The cast is deep, the central pairing is convincing, and the 60-episode run gives the story room to breathe even when it wastes some of that room. “Rent-a-Girlfriend” is not subtle. It does not want to be.
