Dumb and Dumber opens on a chipped tooth and ends on a haircut, and in between Peter Farrelly’s 1994 road comedy turns two of the dumbest men in Rhode Island into a $247.3 million hit. The film cost $17 million. It stars Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas and Jeff Daniels as Harry Dunne, and it was released by New Line Cinema on December 16, 1994.

A Limo Driver and a Dog Groomer
Lloyd drives a limousine in Providence. He falls for a passenger, Mary Swanson, played by Lauren Holly, who is flying to Aspen, Colorado. She leaves a briefcase at the airport. Lloyd tries to return it. He does not know the case holds ransom money she left for two criminals, Joe “Mental” Mentalino and J. P. Shay.
Lloyd falls out of the jetway and loses his job. Harry, a dog groomer, loses his too after showing up late to a dog show with the dogs covered in food. The two flee their apartment when Mental and Shay come calling. They mistake the crooks for debt collectors.
A Van Shaped Like a Dog
Lloyd talks Harry into driving Mary’s briefcase to Aspen in Harry’s dog-styled van. Mental poses as a hitchhiker and gets picked up. The pair annoy him with childish antics. At lunch he plans to slip them rat poison pills. They prank him with chili peppers in his burger, which aggravates his stomach ulcer. He mistakes the pills for his medication and dies by his own poison.

The trip rolls on. Harry flirts with a fellow Aspen-bound driver named Beth. Lloyd takes a wrong turn and drives all night through Nebraska. Harry quits the journey. Lloyd trades the van for a minibike and talks him back into it. They reach Aspen, live it up on the lost money, and fight for Mary’s heart.
Carrey at $7 Million, Daniels at $50,000
The casting is the best story here. The Farrelly brothers did not know who Carrey was. They knew him only as “the white guy” on In Living Color. A screening of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective changed that. On the strength of that film’s box office, Carrey negotiated a $7 million salary. Daniels was paid around $50,000.
New Line Cinema did not want Daniels at all. He was known for dramatic work. The Farrellys and Carrey wanted him anyway, and the studio offered the low fee hoping he would pass. His agent told him it would kill his career. Daniels took it. Nicolas Cage was proposed as Carrey’s co-star, tried to negotiate a $2 million raise, and lost the part. He said he turned it down to do Leaving Las Vegas. Gary Oldman and Cage were the original choices for Lloyd and Harry, according to Splitsider. Steve Martin and Martin Short were among 100 actors who passed on Lloyd.
What the Two Men Carry
Carrey’s chipped tooth was real, from a childhood fight. He had it capped years before and simply had the crown removed for the role. That is the whole method on display: a genuine flaw, worn as a joke, and it works.
The film’s reputation rests on the pairing, not the plot. Carrey is the live wire; Daniels is the deadpan anchor, and the gap between them is the engine. The road-trip structure is thin, the ransom thread is thinner, and the gags that land hardest are the small ones — the jetway fall, the chili peppers, the dog van.

Dumb and Dumber earned mixed reviews and still became a franchise, spawning an animated series, a 2003 prequel and a 2014 sequel. The commercial case is settled. The critical case is not: the film is funny in stretches, slack in others, and it launched the Farrelly brothers while proving Daniels could be a gifted comedic actor.
