EA’s NHL series needed fixing after the jump to new consoles, and NHL 16 is where it got one

NHL 16 review: EASHL returns with class-based progression, NBC presentation shines, but online servers shut down in 2022. Score: 7.9/10.

EA Canada shipped NHL 16 on September 15, 2015, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with a separate PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release called NHL: Legacy Edition. It is the 25th game in the NHL series. Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks is the cover athlete, his second turn on an NHL cover after NHL 11.

The headline is not the roster. It is the return of a mode EA had cut.

EA Sports Hockey League Comes Back

EASHL is the online co-operative mode where players build a custom skater, join a team of other custom skaters and play against other teams. It was left out of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of NHL 15. Its absence was the loudest complaint about that game.

NHL 16 brings it back with a rebuilt progression system. EA dropped attributes and boosts and moved to a class-based model, similar to how Be a Pro handles player growth. The stated aim was balance. Anyone who played the old EASHL remembers why that mattered: the mode rewarded time spent grinding upgrades as much as it rewarded passing.

A beta ran from July 30 to August 10 for owners of NHL 15.

What Ships on the Disc

The mode list is deep, and it covers the usual ground.

  • Be a GM: run any NHL team as its general manager.
  • Be a Pro: create a player and build a career.
  • Hockey Ultimate Team: collect cards of real players, assemble a roster, play online or against A.I. teams.
  • EA Sports Hockey League: the co-op mode described above.

Offline and online shootout modes are in. So are online team play, which puts you in control of players from real clubs, and online versus, a straight head-to-head match.

NBC’s Score Bug, Mike Emrick’s Voice

NHL 16 presents its games in the style of NBC Sports Network. The score bug is updated and can now stay on screen in a transparent view instead of vanishing.

Mike “Doc” Emrick calls play-by-play. Eddie Olczyk handles color. Ray Ferraro works the ice-side reporter role. Emrick and Olczyk appear as themselves in pregame intro cutscenes.

The whole thing runs on EA Sports’ Ignite engine.

NHL 16 Against NHL 15

Feature NHL 15 (PS4/XONE) NHL 16
EASHL co-op mode Not included Returns, class-based progression
Attributes and boosts Present in prior EASHL Removed
NBC-style presentation Included Included, transparent score bug
Commentary team Emrick, Olczyk, Ferraro Emrick, Olczyk, Ferraro
Platforms PS4, Xbox One PS4, Xbox One, plus Legacy Edition on PS3 and 360

The comparison is the point. NHL 16 is not a rebuild. It is a repair job on a game that shipped hollow in two of its most important places.

Where the Repair Holds

The class-based EASHL is the right call. Removing attributes and boosts takes the mode’s economy out of the equation and puts it back on the ice, where a co-op hockey game should live. That change alone justifies the year.

Be a GM and Be a Pro are intact and familiar. Hockey Ultimate Team does what card collecting always does. Nothing here reinvents the series.

The presentation is the other real gain. Keeping the score bug visible in a transparent state sounds minor until you play without it. Emrick and Olczyk are the correct booth for this sport, and putting their actual selves in the pregame cutscenes is a small touch that sells the broadcast framing.

The Ceiling

NHL 16 does not push the sport forward. It restores what was taken away and polishes what was left. On PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, that was enough in 2015 because NHL 15 had set the floor so low.

The Legacy Edition on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is a different product with a different name, and buyers on those platforms should treat it as such rather than as the same game.

One more thing worth saying plainly: the online servers for NHL 16 were shut down on June 6, 2022. EASHL, online team play, online versus and Hockey Ultimate Team’s online half are gone. What remains is the offline package. For a game whose best feature was co-operative play with other people, that is a hard end, and it is the reason the score below describes a disc that no longer does everything it was reviewed for.

What the Disc Is Worth Now

NHL 16 earns its standing as the correction to NHL 15. The EASHL return is the reason to own it, the class-based progression is the right fix, and the NBC presentation package is the best it had been in the series. The modes around it are competent and unambitious.

It is a good hockey game that spent its energy getting back to even. That is a real achievement after NHL 15, and it is not the same thing as moving forward.
