Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited on stage at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards to mark the 30th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the moment carried both jokes and grief.
The pair appeared together during the ceremony on Monday to celebrate the show’s milestone. Gellar played the title character, while Boreanaz played Angel, the vampire with a soul she fell in love with. Their chemistry remains strong, even three decades later.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ premiered,” Boreanaz said, setting the scene for a nostalgic evening. Gellar responded with a laugh: “Yes. For those of you keeping track at home, I had just turned two.”
Opening the Anniversary
The reunion opened with a simple reminder of how much time has passed. Boreanaz framed the night as a chance to look back at a show that started as a small idea and grew into something far bigger.
Gellar’s response — “Yes. For those of you keeping track at home, I had just turned two” — set the tone for the rest of the segment. It was playful, self-aware, and a little wry.
The Age Gap Joke
The reunion quickly turned to the absurdity of their on-screen pairing. Gellar’s character, Buffy, was a teenage girl chosen by fate to fight vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness. Angel was a vampire with a soul carrying around a couple hundred years of regret.
“When you think about it, it’s kind of crazy,” Boreanaz said. He listed the setup: a teenage girl fighting supernatural threats, falling in love with a vampire with a soul.
He then suggested the relationship was a “May-December romance.” Gellar corrected him, calling it “more like a May-December 1787 romance.” Angel was 241 years old, which made the age gap far larger than anyone in the room had remembered.
Boreanaz added, “I always thought that Buffy and Angel were endgame,” a reference to the idea that the two were meant to be together forever. Gellar was quick to shut down that theory. “Well, I guess we won’t find out!” she said with a shrug, alluding to Hulu’s recent cancellation of the Buffy reboot.
Acknowledging Fallen Castmates
The reunion took a serious turn when Gellar and Boreanaz paused to honor the cast members who have died in recent years. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy’s sister Dawn Summers, passed away in February 2025. Nicholas Brendan, who played the lovable goofball Xander Harris, died in March 2026. Anthony Stewart Head, who played Buffy’s Watcher Rupert Giles, died in June 2026.
“It has been a tough two years for our beloved cast and crew, and we feel very lucky to have known and worked with such amazing people,” Gellar said.
The acknowledgment was brief but sincere. The deaths of these actors have reshaped how fans remember the show, and the reunion served as a reminder of what the show lost.
The Spin-Off Legacy
Buffy aired for seven seasons, from 1997 to 2003, starting on The WB before moving to UPN for its final two years. The show was a reimagining of the 1992 movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which starred Kristy Swanson as the titular California cheerleader destined to battle the undead. Series creator Joss Whedon also wrote the movie.

Angel aired for five seasons, from 1999 to 2004, on The WB.
The Revival That Fell Through
A pilot titled Buffy: New Sunnydale was ordered by Hulu in 2025. Gellar was set to reprise her role, now training a new slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The pilot, directed by Chloe Zhao, was filmed in late 2025. All seemed to be on track. Then Gellar announced in March 2026 that Hulu had decided to pass on the project.
“I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” she told fans on Instagram.
The revival’s failure has left fans without a new season, and Gellar’s shrug at the Emmys was a direct nod to that disappointment.
The Award Presentation
Gellar and Boreanaz presented the award for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The category ultimately went to Matthew Rhys, who starred in Netflix’s The Beast in Me. His fellow nominees included Riz Ahmed, who starred in Prime Video’s Bait, Jason Bateman, who starred in Netflix’s Black Rabbit, Charlie Hunnam, who starred in Netflix’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story, and Oscar Isaac, who starred in Netflix’s Beef.

The Moment at the Emmys
