BlizzCon 2026 brought the first real look at Diablo 5, and the game appears to be far more than a simple sequel to Diablo 4. Blizzard revealed the game’s setting, its cast, and its systems during the show, giving fans plenty to talk about before the game even has a full reveal.
The Setting: Sanctuary After Diablo’s Conquest
Diablo 5 takes place a century after the events of Diablo 4. Blizzard confirmed the game’s world has fully succumbed to evil, with Diablo himself having already conquered the planet. Towns no longer exist, and the world has become a ruin. The game’s map is smaller than Diablo 4’s sprawling Eastern continent, forcing players to constantly travel across the Western continent in a caravan.
That caravan grows as the game progresses, expanding in number the deeper you go and the more allies you meet along the way. It serves as a roving campsite, much like the camps found in Baldur’s Gate or Dragon Age. The idea comes from Jennifer Hepler, the game’s narrative director and a veteran of BioWare’s Dragon Age series.
Companions, Vendors, and a Treasure Goblin
The companions in Diablo 5 fill several roles at once. They serve as vendors, and each has their own story about surviving in a ruined Sanctuary. Those stories feed into the side quests they give, adding depth to the world around them.
One companion is a Sister of the Sightless Eye, a member of a secretive order in the Western continent. The most intriguing companion is a treasure goblin, the loot piñata of Diablo’s world. Blizzard confirmed the character is searching for meaning in a world where greed has lost its purpose.
Procedural Ruins and Returning Classes
Diablo the creature reshapes the ruined overworld throughout the game. The landscape changes each time you visit it, with topology, points of interest, and roaming monsters all shifting. Rewards also change with each visit, making the world feel alive rather than static.
Some of Diablo 3’s classes are returning in Diablo 5, including the Demon Hunter and the Monk. New to the series is the Plague Knight, a heavily-armoured class who spreads disease across the battlefield and then consumes it for power. Blizzard aims to have more Diablo 5 classes at launch than any other game in the series.
Gear, Inventory, and a Return to Diablo 2
Itemisation draws inspiration from Diablo 2, a surprise given that the series had stripped away many of its more complex systems for later entries. Runes and Runewords are confirmed to return, along with gear sets.
Blizzard is also experimenting with stat requirements for gear, meaning not everything you find is immediately equipable. Belts and item tiers return, and large items once again take more space in your inventory. This could make the experience more involved, closer to Path of Exile than Diablo 4.
Combat, Multiplayer, and the Road Ahead
Blizzard only touched on combat briefly in an interview with GameSpot, saying the team has “some great, interesting ideas about how to make combat feel even more visceral, even more action-forward.” That description leaves plenty of room for interpretation, but the game appears to continue the action-forward direction established in Diablo 4.
Multiplayer remains less clear. Diablo 5 is playable solo and in co-op, but Blizzard has not said whether it is a shared world like Diablo 4 or a fundamentally online experience. With town hubs seemingly replaced by a constant caravan, it is unclear where players would gather.

What We Know So Far
Diablo 5 is currently in full production, and Blizzard plans to share more details in the coming years. The game is scheduled for a spring 2029 release, which puts it surprisingly close to Diablo 4’s timeline. There were more than a decade between Diablos 2 and 3, and between 3 and 4, but only six years between Diablos 4 and 5.
That timing has raised concerns that Blizzard will focus on Diablo 5 development at the expense of Diablo 4 expansions. Cautious comments from the company already suggest that is the intent.
The Netflix Animated Series and the Switch 2 Version
The announcement of a Netflix animated Diablo series adds to the franchise’s momentum, alongside a Switch 2 version of Diablo 4. Together, these projects show Blizzard is treating the IP as a multimedia property.
The excitement is real, and the details Blizzard has shared paint a compelling picture of what Diablo 5 could be. The game’s blend of Diablo 2’s systems, Diablo 3’s procedural dungeons, and a narrative-driven approach from a BioWare veteran make it a distinct entry in the series.
Whether it lives up to the promise remains to be seen. The road to spring 2029 is long, and there is still plenty of time for Blizzard to refine the game. For now, the treasure goblin searching for meaning in a world without greed is a memorable start.
