Hotel Transylvania 2 wants to be a bigger, brighter sequel. It mostly succeeds at being louder instead. The jokes land less often than they did the first time around, and the new additions to the family feel like padding rather than purpose.
Dracula, Mavis, Jonathan and Wayne return to the castle for a baby shower that turns into a full-blown monster celebration. The setup is simple: a newborn needs protection, and the hotel needs a reason to throw a party. What follows is a series of gags about parenting, aging and the perils of being a father-to-be.

The Gags That Land
Some jokes work. The baby’s first word is a running gag that pays off more than once. The human-vampire relationship tension carries over smoothly from the first film, and the writers lean on it again. The animation remains sharp, and the castle itself is a joy to look at.
But the humor is thinner overall. One-liners that were clever the first time around feel recycled here. The movie repeats its own jokes with diminishing returns.
The New Characters
The biggest addition is Drac’s father, Vlad the Impaler. He brings a new dynamic to the family, but the character feels underwritten. His scenes are funny in spots, but he doesn’t add much beyond being a grumpy grandpa.
The supporting cast gets some time too. The Muppets make a brief appearance, and their jokes are the funniest moments in the film. But they’re gone before they can anchor the story.
Where It Falls Short
The plot stalls in the middle. The threat feels small compared to the first film’s stakes. The resolution is rushed, and the emotional beats about family don’t land with the weight they should.
Hotel Transylvania 2 is competent but unremarkable. It’s a safe bet for families who enjoyed the original, but it doesn’t earn a repeat visit on its own merits.
